“How did you do it? Lose the weight, I mean. Did you join a different gym?”

“No, I actually took up trail running. It’s sort of like a mud run, but without all the mud,” she said with a grin.

He chuckled. “Well, that’s good to hear. I’m glad you found an activity that you enjoy while burning calories. That’s half the battle when it comes to staying fit.”

“I agree. That’s why I’ve since reached out to the other girls and started a hiking group. All of us women now meet up a couple of times a week to hit the trails together. It’s been fun, and I’ve really gotten to know them so much better. I should’ve done that a long time ago. That’s how I was able to lose even more weight on my own. I have an awesome support system. Who knew?”

He smiled. “Well, you look amazing. I can tell how hard you’ve worked. You should be proud of yourself.”

A maelstrom of emotions overtook her. Happiness. Joy. Pride. She was so dang proud of herself. Deservedly so. “I am. It wasn’t easy.”

Adam nodded. “It never is. But you’re killing it, and that’s all that matters.”

“Thanks.”

“So I guess you’re ready for your final weigh-in.”

Preslee shook her head. “Nope. I don’t need a final weigh-in.”

He blinked. “But I thought you said…”

“I said it was weigh-in day. Not that I was going to weigh in. Sorry, Adam, but I’m not getting on that scale this time. I don’t need to.”

A smile spread across his face. “You sure? Because no matter what number pops up on the scale, it doesn’t change the fact that you should celebrate.”

“I’m positive,” she said confidently. “In the past, I’ve always quit before giving myself any real chance of being successful at losing weight. But now that I’ve been sticking to a healthy lifestyle, I’ve already seen exactly what I’ve been able to accomplish. I feel great. I’m stronger than I was before. Mind, body, and soul.” Then she grinned. “I only came by because I need to finish what I started. What we started.”

He scowled. “Look, I’m sorry. Kurt and I should’ve never made that stupid bet in the first place, and we both regret hurting you. It was never our intention.”

“I know that. I do,” she said, licking her dry lips. “And I’m willing to forgive you both. This time. But it’s your only chance to get back in my good graces, Adam. You won’t get another.”

“I won’t need another.” He reached for her and pulled her into his arms, hugging her to him.
