“That’s for you to decide. But I will give you something to consider. Have you ever made a mistake and wished you could undo it? Or maybe kept something from someone you loved and needed to tell the truth but were afraid to? That’s not always easy to do. So if Adam was planning on coming clean, then maybe you should take that into consideration. It sounds like he has integrity and wanted to do what was right, even if it put him into an uncomfortable position.”
Stunned silent, Preslee sat there quietly as guilt swam through her veins. Wow, she was such a hypocrite. Here she was upset at Adam for keeping something from her, but she had done the same thing to her dad. Maybe it was time for her to come clean too. “Actually…” She swallowed hard. “Dad, um…there’s something I need to tell you.”
His mouth fell open. “Oh dear Lord. You’re pregnant.”
“What? No.” She shook her head furiously. “I’m not pregnant. Where did you get that from?”
He exhaled in relief. “When a daughter says that she has something to tell her father, we dads are always going to jump to the worst-case scenario.”
She giggled. “Me being pregnant is the worst-case scenario? Really? Because I could think of so many things that are much worse.”
He chuckled. “Are you trying to scare your old man? Because if so, you’re doing a great job.”
Preslee smirked. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay. Now what did you want to tell me?”
Yeah, that. She hung her head, not wanting to look him in the eyes. “I sort of did something…eight years ago…that I never told you about.”
He sat there silently for a moment, taking in what she said. “Okay,” he said, puzzlement lacing his voice.
Tears stung the backs of her eyes, but she couldn’t stop now. “I want you to know that it had nothing to do with you or anything to do with our relationship. I would never want you to think that. You’re a wonderful dad. Always have been.”
His brows collapsed over his concerned eyes. “Honey, you’re starting to worry me. What did you do so long ago that you didn’t want to tell me about?”
She lifted her head, needing to see his reaction when she told him the truth. She needed to know if she was hurting him. Man, she hoped not. “Eight years ago, I went looking for my biological mother.”
He stilled. “Oh.” He didn’t say anything at first. Then he finally asked, “Did you…find her?”
She nodded solemnly. “Yes. I met her in person.”
His facial expression remained neutral, and she wasn’t sure what he was thinking. “Was she off the…uh…” His words faltered.
