He looked confused. “You had dinner with Josh?”

“Yeah.”

His brow rose. “What about Adam? He’s the one I’ve heard so much about for the past month. You’ve spent almost every day with him.”

She shrugged. “We had a falling-out.”

“That’s too bad,” her dad said. “What did he do? Do I need to pay him a visit?”

“No, Dad,” she said with laugh. “Hold your fire.” She plopped down next to him on the couch and leaned into his shoulder—the one on his good arm. “He just…well, something happened, that’s all.”

“Well, no. Obviously that’s not all. Otherwise you two…uh, I mean you wouldn’t look like a kid whose balloon just got popped.”

Yep. She’d never been able to hide her emotions very well. She’d always been too transparent for her own good. “I guess you could say that, in a way, Adam did pop my balloon. We, uh…broke up.” She blew out a breath. “But it’s okay.”

His eyes hardened. “I will be paying him a house call. Broken wrist or not. No one is going to get away with dumping my little girl. Not while I’m still breathing.”

She patted her dad’s arm. “That’s sweet, Dad. But I’m not a little girl anymore. And that isn’t what happened. Adam didn’t leave me. I walked away from him.”

“Because he lied to you?”

Her eyes widened. “How did you know?”

“I, uh…didn’t,” he said, wincing. “I guessed.”

Good guess, if you asked her. Almost too good. She eyed him warily. “Well, you nailed it perfectly. Yes, he lied to me about something. He swore he was going to come clean, but I found out about the lie before he had a chance to.”

“Do you believe him? Do you think he would’ve come clean?”

She thought about it for a moment before answering. “Yeah, I do. Not only because he seemed sincere, but from what I overheard him say when he didn’t know I was standing behind him, it sounded like he was going to tell me the truth.”

“That’s good.”

“Yeah, but the lie isn’t even what bothered me most. I’m just…disappointed in him, I guess. That was what I meant about him popping my balloon. I thought Adam was somebody I could count on. Now, I’m not so sure.” Her shoulders slumped.

Her dad gave her a little squeeze. “I’m not making excuses for Adam. But from everything you’ve told me, he seems like a pretty good guy. So is it possible that this is a onetime occurrence?”

“I…don’t know. Maybe. Probably. But even if it is, does that excuse it?”
