Josh shrugged. “Not much. Since it was my day off, it was a lazy day for me. I slept in until almost noon and then headed to the gym. That’s when I ran into you out in the parking lot.”
“I see.”
He took a bite of his steak, chewed it up, and then swallowed. “Speaking of that,” he said, one brow rising in interest. “I couldn’t help but notice that you were upset when I ran into you. Everything okay?”
“Yep.”
“Did something happen between you and Adam?”
At the mention of Adam’s name, hurt and anger flared inside of her, but she managed to bank her emotions. “What do you mean?”
“For a while there, I thought you two were a couple. You seemed like a couple at the reception. So I figured you guys broke up or something today at the gym.”
Well, that was not at all what she wanted to talk about right now. Especially with Josh of all people. “No. We were…never dating.”
“But you wanted to, right?”
“Um, nope.”
He grinned. “You’re a bad liar.”
“I’m not…” Oh hell. If she lied to Josh now, she would be just as bad as Adam. “Yeah, okay. You’re right. I wanted us to be a couple, but unfortunately it just didn’t work out.”
“May I ask why?”
She shrugged and scraped the fork across the plate. “He lied to me.”
“Oh. Well, that’s a dick thing to do to someone you care about.”
She couldn’t help but laugh. “Yes, it is.” Then her smile faded. “But I’m not too sure he cared about me. Because if he had…”
“He wouldn’t have treated you like that,” Josh said, finishing her sentence.
“Yeah,” she agreed.
Josh smiled. “I probably shouldn’t ask since it’s none of my business, but…” Then he winced as if he was waiting for her to get mad.
“You want to know what Adam lied to me about?”
Although his curiosity was clearly piqued, Josh shrugged. “Only if you want someone to talk to. Like I said, it’s none of my business. If it’s too personal and you’d rather keep it to yourself, that’s fine. Either way, I just want you to know that I’m here for you. We’re friends, right?”
She smiled. “Yes, Josh. We’re friends.”
Actually, that was all they were…and all they ever would be. Well, that and coworkers, of course. While Josh was a handsome guy who had a lot to offer a woman, he wasn’t who she wanted. Actually, now that she thought about it, he never really was what she wanted either.
When her dad had taken such a bad tumble, Preslee had realized her father wasn’t as invincible as she’d always believed him to be. And that had scared the hell out of her.
