She nodded but didn’t speak. Sadly, that was the way she’d responded to almost everything he’d asked her since he’d picked her up half an hour ago. It was bad enough that they’d driven in silence all the way to the restaurant. But if she hadn’t had to order dinner for herself, she probably wouldn’t have spoken at all.
It wasn’t Josh though. Not really. After finding out about what Adam had done to her, she just wasn’t in the mood to talk. To anyone. She wasn’t in the mood to eat either, which was why she was picking at the salmon on her plate with her fork.
“Not hungry?” Josh asked.
Preslee shook her head, still not speaking. She never should’ve agreed to this date. Not only because she was such crappy company for Josh right now, but pain and fury still battled for position inside of her, and she wasn’t sure which emotion would pop out of her mouth if she dared to open it.
Damn it, Adam.
Over the past month, she’d asked him more than once why he wanted to help her work out, and he’d actually convinced her that he was only doing so because he was a nice guy. Hmph. Nice guys didn’t go around making bets with their friends about women. Nor did they use unsuspecting people as marketing tools. What kind of jerk did that?
Yet she hadn’t actually been unsuspecting, had she? She had known all along that something wasn’t adding up. After all, that was why she’d questioned his motives to begin with. But she’d convinced herself that she was reading into things. Why? Because she trusted him and thought she could count on him. Now she knew better.
But why hadn’t she trusted herself? Why hadn’t she listened to that inner voice of hers telling her that something wasn’t right? That was the last time she would ever forgo trusting herself. Especially because she was too busy trusting some guy. It was a mistake she wouldn’t repeat. With Adam or any other male.
Man, she hated liars.
She wasn’t sure what hurt more. Knowing that Adam had pretended to care about helping her get fit when he clearly had other motives, or learning that their entire relationship had been based on a bet and lies.
She sniffed. The back of her eyes stung, and she knew that if she didn’t stop thinking about Adam, she was going to end up crying again. So she shoved him completely out of her mind. Too bad it wasn’t as easy to do when it came to her heart.
Preslee took a gulp of the ice water Josh had pushed toward her and tried to make small talk to ease the tension she felt. “Uh, so what did you do today?”
