But lightning cracked in the distance, bringing him back to his senses. If he didn’t stop now, he would be taking her right there in the truck in the middle of a parking lot…and a rainstorm. Wouldn’t be a bad way to spend the afternoon, but the last thing he needed was for them to get caught fornicating in public. That news would surely travel fast in a small town.

He slowed the kiss and pulled back to nibble on her bottom lip before setting her away from him. “You should probably go before we, uh…” His gaze shifted downward, and her eyes followed.

She smiled, apparently liking the reaction his body had to hers. “Okay. See you later.”

“Definitely,” he promised, glad that he’d managed to vanquish any fears she might have had about what he wanted to talk about later.

Preslee threw the door open and hurried to her car. It only took seconds to get her car door unlocked, but in that short amount of time, her hair and shirt became soaked through. Stubborn woman. She should’ve taken his umbrella. But she made it inside her car, started it, and waved as she pulled away.

Adam headed in the direction of the Body Shop as the rain dissipated. The gym had opened several hours before, and Kurt would already be there going over yesterday’s paperwork. Adam had never backed out of a bet before so he wasn’t sure how Kurt would react, but in the end, it didn’t matter. Because he cared too much about Preslee to lose her over a ridiculous bet.

When he arrived, Kurt was busy spotting a guy on the bench press so Adam waited behind the counter. He looked over the paperwork Kurt had already finished and was pleased to see that their memberships had nearly doubled from what they were the previous month. Man, that was great.

Kurt appeared and gave him a wary look. “Why are you here this early?”

Adam checked his watch. “What do you mean early? It’s already after noon.”

“Yeah, but ever since you’ve been training Preslee, you haven’t been coming in until later in the day. This is early…for you.”

“I need to talk to you about something important.”

Kurt leaned his hip against the counter and glared at him. “You’re firing me?”

“What?” Adam shook his head. What was up with everyone jumping to conclusions? “No. Where did you get that idea?”

Kurt’s arms relaxed. “From you, moron. You said you wanted to talk about something important. When a boss tells you that, it’s because you’re getting fired.”

“Yeah, maybe. But employees don’t usually call their bosses morons either. So clearly we’re more than that. I told you our friendship would always come before our work relationship. I meant that.”
