She blinked. He thought their kiss had been hot too? Then she shook her head, realizing that he’d meant for it to come across that way to others. “No, I meant Josh in particular. Apparently he saw the kiss. And judging from the irritated look on his face, I’m certain he didn’t like it.”
A small crease formed between Adam’s eyes. “Well, that was the idea behind the kiss, right?”
“Yeah, but I don’t want…”
Whoa! What was she doing? She couldn’t tell Adam what she was thinking. No way was she going to admit that Josh wasn’t who or what she wanted, all because she’d stupidly allowed herself to fall for Adam. Just because she’d developed feelings for him didn’t mean that he returned them. What if he outright rejected her? Oh man, that would suck.
She shook her head. Okay, so maybe Adam was nice enough that he wouldn’t purposely try to hurt or embarrass her. Especially in front of others. But that didn’t mean she wouldn’t be regardless. She would. No matter how nicely he turned her down.
Adam frowned as he gazed across the distance at Josh. Then he turned his attention back to her. “Can we go somewhere to talk?”
“Okay, do you want to grab a corner table or step outside?”
“Neither. I would rather go back to my place so that we can be alone without any interruptions. Is that okay?”
She nodded hesitantly but had a strong feeling that she wasn’t going to like where this was heading. “Sure.”
“You want me to drive?”
“No, I’ll take my car and follow you.” If this was going the way she thought it was, then she wanted to be able to leave on her own.
His forehead creased. “But you’ve been drinking.”
“Not really. I only had a few sips of that margarita. Before that, I drank club soda. You probably had more than I did.”
“I only had one beer. And I was nursing it.”
“Good, then we can both drive.”
He stared at her for a moment, but she couldn’t read his strange expression. “Actually, I’d rather you ride with me. Even if you didn’t have much, it was a hard liquor.”
“Okay, fine,” she said, just wanting to get this over with. “Then let’s go.”
His apartment complex was only a couple of miles away, and they walked to his front door in silence. He hadn’t said a word on the drive over, and even when they went inside, he still didn’t speak. Just closed the door behind them, as if something weighed heavily on his mind. So she sat on the edge of the sofa and waited for the bad news that she expected to come.
She hated this. Why couldn’t he have just done this at the bar?
