“That’s because she doesn’t. Jessa and Sidney have both invited Preslee to join them on multiple occasions, but she never does. I was surprised that day when she said she was actually going to the wedding. But then Brett told me later that Sidney had called Preslee the day before and wouldn’t take no for an answer. He said she told Preslee that all of her girlfriends needed to be there on her big day because she could use the emotional support. Probably true, since she’s marrying Brett.” Max grinned.

Adam thought about that for a moment. Did it have something to do with what Preslee had said the other night? That other people would only let her down, if given the chance. Was he one of those people?

“You’re thinking awfully hard. Is there a problem?”

“No. Not really.”

“Then why are you scowling like that? Did something happen with Preslee? Is she in trouble?”

“No,” Adam said, shaking his head. “Not anymore. I took care of it. Or at least I think I did.”

“That doesn’t sound convincing. Is there anything I can do to help? Especially if it involves Preslee. I still owe her one.”

“Maybe. She always seems to go out of her way for others, yet she doesn’t like to ask for help in return. I know she could use some extra support with this whole fitness thing. I don’t really want to go into specifics, but she, uh, did something recently that could’ve been harmful to her health. I just want to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

“Was it diet pills or some extreme fad diet?”

Adam blinked. “Both. How did you know?”

Max held up both palms. “I’ve struggled with a food addiction my entire life. Been there, done that.”

Adam had forgotten about that. He’d been surprised when he had heard about Max’s food addiction last year because the guy was always in the gym and had a strong physique. Something he had obviously earned through a lot of hard work. But that only went to show why no one should be judged by appearance alone. You never know what someone is struggling with on the inside. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be. I’ve learned to control it.” Max gazed at Adam sincerely. “So what can I do to help? Do you want me to talk to her?”

“Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of you talking to your wife.”

Max cocked his head in confusion. “My wife?”

Adam nodded. “Yeah, I was thinking maybe you could ask her if she’s willing to join the gym. You had mentioned it before, and I think it would be a good idea. Preslee having a workout buddy would be a great way to stay on track.”
