‘Where’s Dell?’ Greta said. Not exactly changing the subject.
Heidi shrugged. ‘You tell me,’ she said.
‘I don’t know where she is,’ Greta said.
‘Huh,’ Heidi said.
‘I haven’t seen her since yesterday,’ Greta said.
‘Tuesday,’ Peggy said. She’d stopped what she was doing and was just standing and thinking.
‘Tuesday,’ Greta said.
Heidi shrugged. ‘Oh well.’ And she took a spoonful of Weet-Bix from her bowl and looked at the box again.
Greta and Peggy looked at each other. Then Dell came in.
Heidi didn’t look up. The scar on her face was bigger when she was angrier. All the anger was inside her though, seeping out as sarcasm and irony.
‘Morning,’ Greta said, and in her agitation she knocked over her mug as she raised her hand to wave.
Dell opened her eyes wide.
‘What?’ Heidi said.
‘Stop fucking with them,’ Dell said.
‘Fuck you,’ Heidi said.
They looked so strange together. Like a thing at war with itself.
‘Where have you been?’ Heidi said.
‘Nowhere.’ Dell opened the fridge.
‘See?’ Heidi was talking to Peggy and Greta now. ‘You have to watch her. You can’t trust her.’ Heidi was looking at them like Dell wasn’t there anymore. ‘She’s up to something.’
Everyone was quiet for a minute.
‘Has she asked you to keep track of anything?’ Heidi said.
Peggy and Greta shook their head.
‘Has she told you not to tell me?’ Heidi asked.
Peggy and Greta looked at her. They thought they could hear Dell laughing in the background as she turned on the jug.
‘Doesn’t that seem dodgy to you?’ Heidi asked.
‘No,’ said Peggy.
‘Does nothing about this seem dodgy?’ Heidi asked.
‘Only you,’ Greta said.
‘I always thought Ian was a bad idea,’ Heidi said. ‘Remember that. Butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth, but she’s crafty as fuck.’
‘Do you want a coffee?’ Dell asked.
Heidi nodded and her body changed in that moment. She slid in a way that took her body through an odd shape until it came to rest in a position that was the same as Dell’s would have been had she been sitting at the table reading the Weet-Bix box. Heidi looked at her watch. She was smiling now. Her scar had settled. ‘We might have to go to work soon, eh?’ she said to Dell, pleasantly.
‘Yeah,’ said Dell. Looking at her own watch, and putting some Weet-Bix in a bowl. ‘I’ll just eat these,’ she said.
‘Cool,’ Heidi said. ‘I’ll wait while you do.’ She sat back and looked at Greta and Peggy. ‘What are you up to today?’
‘Work,’ they said.
