When they got home the fireworks were in full swing around the neighbourhood. They both fell into the couch and sat the bowls beside them on the floor and just looked out the window for a while at the black sky light up with sudden explosions of colour. They could sleep in tomorrow, but they probably wouldn’t. They woke up at the same time every day.
‘That was nice.’ Greta was still in small-talk mode.
‘Yeah,’ Peggy said. Then they just sat in silence and their phones vibrated and it was a message from Donna wanting to know if they wanted to come to lunch with her and her girlfriend.
Sure, Peggy typed, and they both stood up to brush their teeth.

During the night, it rained. It woke them up and they got up for a cup of tea and then went back to bed and fell asleep for a few more hours. It was the weekend, so they could have slept in. But they woke up at the same time each day whether they set an alarm or not. They lived near the motorway now and sometimes they thought it was because it always got busy at the same time each day, but that seemed unlikely. There was something internal. Even when daylight saving came on. Like time was part of them or someone was waking them up from inside.
They yawned and stretched. They hardly looked at each other now. To begin with it had been a bit of a novelty but now there didn’t seem to be much need. They knew each other like they knew themselves. Greta had the first shower this morning and Peggy put on the coffee. They had a stovetop, so it took a while. It was good to take things slowly. Everyone said so. Especially on the weekend. The weekdays could be a bit of a rush, so it was nice to move around the house slowly. To just move from one room to the next with no real purpose. There was no need for efficiency on the weekend. It was all on a whim. They didn’t have to log in to their work email. They could look at the news and check the message boards they liked. There was no need to look at work messages. Other people moderated websites over the weekend.
