She ran to the train station and decided to stand up all the way to work. She checked the phones. She had both phones. Just in case someone called. She only needed one of the phones, because they were both connected to the same number, but she wanted both of them. The train was busy, she had to stand. As she stared down the carriage, she saw two women sitting next to each other. An earbud each in their ears. They were identical. She hadn’t seen them before, which seemed unlikely. She thought she knew all of them. But she hadn’t seen these ones before. They weren’t twins, she could tell by the way they moved around each other. They were like her – like she had been.

She caught their eyes and smiled, then waved, and they looked away. Out the window, in unison, like a dance to whatever they were listening to. In profile one of them had a flatter nose and she realised they were twins. She ran her waving hand down her clothes, to cover it up. She looked down at her feet and the shoes she’d put on. They were flat pumps but, in the rush to get dressed, one was black and one was navy. She looked around to see if anyone else could see or was looking, but no one else was looking.
