SCENE 47
INT. SUNSPOT PRISON. LATER.
APHRA (narration):
Yeah, so we saved the prison! Well, sort of. I mean, it still shut down right after that. But at least some of us escaped with our lives.
PRISON WARDEN:
Prison systems have been restored. And the evacuation has begun.
Thanks to you, Princess, there are still some of us left to evacuate.
PRINCESS LEIA:
But not enough. Too many people died here today, Warden. Guards and prisoners both.
PRISON WARDEN:
Yes, we’re doing our best to account for all of the remaining inmates.
But, ah…I’m afraid there is one that seems to have been misplaced.
APHRA (narration):
Hmmm, who could he be talking about? No idea.
Oh, right. It was me! While the princess was brooding away about some unhinged rebel spy she hadn’t managed to save, I was booking it for my door—an untended escape pod.
But because she couldn’t leave well enough alone, the princess was hot on my heels. And right before I was set to leap into the escape pod’s warm embrace, she showed up with a blaster.
PRINCESS LEIA:
Get away from the escape pod, Doctor Aphra.
APHRA:
Oh, c’mon. I saved your life like five times today! Way more if you count all the times I didn’t kill you when I really wanted to.
PRINCESS LEIA:
That doesn’t change the fact that you’re a prisoner here. I can’t just let you walk away.
APHRA:
Um, yes, you definitely could.
What if I promise to be good? Or…you know…at least better than usual?
PRINCESS LEIA:
This is no game, Doctor. I hope you realize just how dangerous Darth Vader really is. No matter how useful you are to him now, sooner or later he will get around to killing you.
And when that day comes, if you should happen to somehow survive…
I suggest you look me up.
APHRA:
Wait, but…what are you saying?
PRINCESS LEIA:
I said I couldn’t let you walk away. I didn’t say anything about her.
APHRA:
Whu…
APHRA (narration):
And there she was again…there you were. Damn, Sana, you looked at me like you could see directly into my soul. And you were mad about what you saw.
You kicked me in the midsection. Hard. And I went flying into the escape pod.
COMPUTER VOICE:
Escape pod activated.
SANA STARROS:
And don’t ever come back.
SCENE 48
INT. BAR. THE COSMATANIC STEPPES. THE OUTER RIM. DAY.
Atmosphere: Light conversation and the occasional clink of glasses. A sadder, more abandoned, less rowdy type of bar—but more real.
There’s something comforting about it, especially for someone who wants to disappear. It should feel like we’re on the very edge of the galaxy.
BARTENDER:
Back already, miss? Isn’t it a little early?
APHRA:
The best thing about multi-sun systems, friend? My no-drinks-before-noon rule is wayyy easier to follow. Hit me.
BARTENDER:
