- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
A pair of sparkly suspenders caught my eye and I picked them up. The team was on number thirty-four of the countdown. I managed to clip the suspenders to the back of my pants without too much trouble, but when I tried to pull the front pieces over my shoulders, I accidentally let go of one and it flung backward into Charlotte, who yelped and smacked me on my ass. As I struggled with the suspenders, the team counted out thirty to eighteen.
At seventeen I finally got them on, but that didn’t leave me much time to get another three items on my body. I shoved the clown nose onto my face and frantically searched the table for two more pieces. Sage and Grace had used up the eyelashes, and Potts was wearing all the boas by this point. The only remaining items were a pair of chaps and a headband with alien antennas on it.
Willing my brain to suddenly become drunker than it was, I planted the headband on over my hat and wig, then picked up the chaps. As I did, the team counted out one and then started buzzing like bees again to signal that we were out of time.
Everyone else had managed to get their six items on.
“Looks like you need some help, rook!” Lena called out over the hooting and clapping. “Kat, what d’ya have for our little piece of popcorn chicken here?”
Kat stood up woozily and dug into the duffel bag, which apparently had more items in it in case some inept rookie couldn’t dress herself in time.
From the bag, she pulled out a pair of lacy panties that looked like they belonged in a porn mag and a bra that may have been Madonna’s—at least from what I’d seen from photos of her back in the day—pointy cups extending far enough to jab your eyes out.
“Come ’ere, rook,” Kat said. Her eyes had a bright glaze over them. She was well and truly sauced.
In response, I finished the third of a beer in front of me in three gulps, which earned a few hoots. Shuffling over to Kat, I tried to psych myself up. Suck it up, Daya. If it means being part of the team. Suck. It. Up.
When I stood in front of her, she indicated with her finger to step closer.
Once I did, she glanced around at the others and bounced her eyebrows up and down a few times, causing some titters and catcalls.
Christ, this was so effing unnecessary.
