We soon fell into an easy routine, weekends together walking his spaniel, Bertie, on the Heath. On my nights off, one of us would cook or we’d go out for dinner in Notting Hill Gate or Covent Garden or to a movie. We were officially a couple, Bea and Joe, Joe and Bea and, six months later, I moved in with him. I gave up my bar work so we could have more evenings together, and Joe encouraged me to think about my career, which I did, starting by doing a course in jewellery design. He was my greatest supporter and we were never happier than when scouring Camden Lock looking for vintage jewellery that could be adapted into modern designs – to the point that I took on one of the stalls there on a Saturday, so I could be on site to scoop up any finds as soon as they appeared. I soon had boxes and boxes of brooches, rings, old necklaces, all ready to be reworked. Joe created my first BB logo, had cards made up for me, advertising that I would make bespoke items and, before long, one of his friends gave me a space in his shop in Notting Hill Gate to display my own creations.
