  43. About the Author

I’m happy for her and Kai. They deserve this and each other. I give Liv a sweaty hug and pull Kai in for a bro hug and congratulate them on the pending nuptials. I know Liv will be happy to shed that Harding name. Maybe it will stop people from harassing her about her father’s whereabouts. None of us give a damn where he is, so long as he keeps his ass out of Texas.

I’m in the middle of telling Kai that I expect to be named best man since I feel I played a crucial role in them reuniting when my phone pings with an email.

Of course it’s from the bane of my existence, Lauren Brentwood. I can’t even get away from this woman on a Saturday afternoon.

We started as marketing consultants at Thrive Marketing at the same time years ago, and it’s been hell ever since. My lip snarls as I read her email with a progress report on each consultant’s projects. Does she want a cookie for working on a weekend?

I remove everyone from the email except my buddy Larry, and send him a reply making fun of Lauren for her lack of social life. The email may also imply that if she got some dick maybe she’d loosen up a bit and have something better to do on a Saturday. Petty and unprofessional, I know. But the woman drives me insane.

When my phone chimes again, I open the email app expecting a funny reply from Larry, but instead my face pales at the response I receive from Lauren herself.

Subject: RE: Thrive Project Status Report

Hi Shane,

I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend although whatever you have going on can’t be that exciting since you took the time to read my email on a Saturday afternoon instead of waiting until Monday morning like most people. Perhaps it’s your social life that should have Larry concerned.

I appreciate your heartfelt advice, but maybe if you spent less time worrying about whose face I’m sitting on, this email would’ve ended up in the correct inbox. But then again, your attention to detail, or lack thereof, is probably part of the reason Mr. Spencer handed your last project to me, so no surprise there.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. I hope you’re able to stop fantasizing about my pussy long enough to enjoy it.

Best,

Lauren Brentwood

Fuck me. I scan the email again, noticing that I did in fact send my reply to Lauren Brentwood instead of Larry Brenner. Their close email addresses have tripped me up a few times in the past, but this is by far the worst one to fuck up.

Monday morning is going to be a shit show.
