- About the Author
That motherfucker. I knew he was just biding his time, but I was hoping we would have something to neutralize him before he could act on his plan.
I race home and am relieved to find Kai’s car in the driveway.
“Kai!”
“In here,” he calls from the bedroom. He’s sitting on the bed, head in his hands. I drop to my knees in front of him and rub my hands up his thighs. “You shouldn’t be in that position for a long time; it’s not good for your knee.”
Of course he would be thinking about my knee at a time like this. “Fuck the knee, Kai. I’m so sorry.”
He pushes himself back on the bed and pats his legs, so I quickly get up and straddle his lap with my legs behind him on the bed. “I’m not.”
“What? Kai, this is bad. This could ruin you.”
“No, it won’t. We’re going to take him down, I’m confident in that. And even if these bogus-ass accusations don’t go away when all is said and done, fuck it. I don’t regret a single moment of being with you. You with me?”
“I’m with you.”
A FaceTime call from Angie comes through so I answer. “How’s Kai doing? And how are you? Tell him we know it’s all bullshit. What do you need us to do?”
“Slow down, Angie. We’re okay. We’re figuring things out.” Justine commandeers Angie’s phone and demands to talk to Kai, so I leave them to it in favor of answering the door which someone is trying their hardest to knock down.
I peek through the curtain to make sure it’s not cops trying to force their way in here, but it’s not cops at all. It’s Ciara, Nina, Shane, Sasha, Lincoln, Isaiah, Dom, and a woman that looks familiar but I’m not sure why.
“Hey,” Ciara greets when I open the door.
“What are you all doing here?”
“We saw the news post and we knew that could only be the work of your trash-ass daddy so we’re here to help,” Sasha adds.
“And we brought backup. Liv, this is my sister, Reggie. She’s a family lawyer but she’s scary as fuck and can practice criminal law too.” At Lincoln’s introduction, Reggie steps up and shakes my hand, assuring me that she can take care of Kai.
“You guys dropped everything to be here right now?”
“Of course. It’s Kai.” Nina shrugs.
“I’m gonna try my best not to go into labor while we’re working but no promises.”
Stepping back inside where Justine and Angie are still plotting with Kai and looking at the makeshift family Kai’s built, I’ve never been more grateful, but it’s time to bring in more reinforcements.
I pull out my phone and call my full arsenal.
