“If you wanna talk about something there’s plenty we can talk about, but that’s not one of them. Not today.”

She pulls the shower curtain closed so I can’t see her anymore. If it weren’t for the pounding of the water running, the silence would be deafening.

And then, the water turns off. Her hand wrenches a towel from the back of the door and I make out the outline of her body being covered by it.

“Okay,” she says as she pushes the curtain back to step out of the shower. “Let’s talk.”

Chapter Twenty-One

Olivia

19 years old

God, he’s beautiful. I take a minute to observe his head of curls, how perfectly conditioned they are after I helped him with his wash day just the other day. I look at his eyes, currently shining with laughter as he animatedly tells a story, and get lost in them. They’re a deep brown, so dark that they appear black, and they’re the kindest eyes I’ve ever seen. His sepia-brown complexion is mesmerizing with how smooth it is. It angers me that I have an entire skincare routine I follow meticulously every night, and he just washes his face with soap and water and yet his skin never has a blemish on it. But then again I can’t be mad at him when he looks at me the way he does.

I look down to his chest, perfectly molded in his white tee, down to his hoopin shorts that hide his muscular thighs. He’s just so damn fine—with a heart to make my knees weak and a mind to make my soul sing—and he’s all mine.

He’s been talking for the last five minutes but I haven’t heard a single word. I’m too excited and scared about what I need to tell him.

I register that his mouth is closed and he’s waiting on a reply from me, and before I know it the words are tumbling out. “I’m pregnant.”

Kai’s jaw drops and then he goes completely still, so still that I can hear the erratic beat of his heart and the faint sounds of people walking by my dorm room.

Just as I’m about to slap the shit out of him because he’s scaring me by not saying anything, he slides to the edge of the bed, rubs his hand down his face, and grabs my hand.

“When did you find out?”

“Last night. Monet went out and got me a bunch of tests. Six tests later, I’m pretty sure this is really happening.” Monet is my roommate and one of my teammates and we’ve grown pretty close. She challenges me on the field and she’s the one who noticed I was more lethargic suddenly and ran to get tests the minute I said I missed my period.
