- About the Author
Kai pushes the top of my laptop with his middle finger, obstructing my view of the screen. “Where are you right now? Because I’m hoping I don’t have to go searching for fearless Olivia.”
Concern mars his features, and I grab his face between my hands. “She’s right here. I’m not worried about him and his bullshit.”
“Good. There’s no reason to be.”
Not true, but I stay quiet because I understand the sentiment. This time, I’ll be ready for whatever Jason Harding has to throw at me.
Chapter Twenty-Four
Kai
I force myself to stay in place instead of pacing the long, narrow hallway. Pacing makes me appear nervous and I am far from nervous. I’m fucking thrilled with what’s about to happen.
When Olivia told me about everything her dad did back then, I wanted to track him down immediately. I was able to contain my ire for a few days because Olivia needed me more and she is and always will be my priority. But now? Now that he’s sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong and causing Olivia even more pain? He’s going to have to face me.
I’ve been waiting in this corridor for ten minutes. It’s clever, really. I showed up at his office demanding to see him, and when his assistant asked if I had an appointment I let her know that he’d see me and to just give him my name. We both know he’ll see me, but he’s determined to make it look like he’s the one in control by making me wait. He might even think if he makes me wait long enough, I’ll give up and leave. He’d be mistaken.
The door opens behind me and I hear his heavy footsteps heading my way, but I don’t give him the satisfaction of turning to face him. I wait for him to step up to my side. “Kai Morris, it’s been a long time, son.” Son. My lips slip into a sneer but I school it back into indifference before I turn to face him fully.
“Jason.” He’s older now. Where he used to have a low cut fade, he now is bald. His beard is now mostly white while his mustache and bushy eyebrows have a salt-and-pepper tint to them. The lines around his eyes and forehead are more pronounced, probably from all the damn scowling he spent his life doing. He still looks sharp though. I understand why people are intimidated by him, but I’m not one of those people.
He holds his hand out for me to shake and when I don’t reciprocate he lets out a dark chuckle and then motions for me to join him in his office.
“What brings you by today?”
“I think you and I are long overdue for a conversation.”
