  43. About the Author

My eyes troll North Carolina’s side looking for Angie, and when I find her she’s already staring me down with an evil smirk. She makes the “you’re dead” gesture at me and I stick my tongue out at her and flip her off. The hammering of the crowd reaches deafening heights.

Two to one, Houston. After the game, Coach Haven daps me up and whispers in my ear that she won’t let the team go easy on me next time, making us both laugh. Angie wraps her arms around my neck, pulling me in close and saying, “The way I see it, esto es un empate.”

I pull away from her and point to the scoreboard. “A tie? Oh, so that big-ass two and that big-ass one means nothing, huh?”

She puts her finger over my lips. “Silencio. Fuck that score. I scored a goal and so did you so you and I are one to one.”

She and I make plans to settle the supposed true winner of today’s game before I make my way over to the stands.

I sign a few autographs and then I hear a soothing voice cut in.

“Excuse me, ma’am, I’m a huge fan. Could you sign my jersey?” I turn expecting to see Kai, and I do, but standing behind him is practically the whole damn family. Justine, Shane, Mr. and Mrs. Morris, Auntie, Po Po, Kylie, Ciara, Nina, and Sasha. The other guys I’m sure are working or on kid duty.

“I can’t believe you all came! Thank you.”

“We wouldn’t miss this,” Sasha squeals.

“Miss what?”

“You signing my jersey.” Kai pushes the jersey to me but it looks different; I just can’t figure out why. When my gaze finds its way to the top of the jersey, I realize the difference. It says Morris instead of Harding.

“Aww, you had a jersey customized?”

“I was hoping it might be the name on your jersey soon.”

I beam at him but then his words register. Wait, what?

“Told you she wouldn’t get it,” Kylie laughs.

“Are you…?”

He pulls out a box and opens it to reveal a gorgeous pear-shaped engagement ring with a chocolate diamond that matches my eyes. “I am. What do you say, Olivia? You wanna make my life complete and marry me?”

The family waits with bated breath for my answer, as if there was a chance I’d say no. My story with Kai may have taken a long detour, but the ending was written in the stars a long time ago.

“Yes, sir.”

Shane

I don’t get the significance of Olivia’s custom-made jersey saying “the boy is mine” on the front, but she let out a full belly laugh when she saw it so I guess she’s happy.
