  43. About the Author

Kai scoots closer to me and wraps his arm around my shoulders. “Why didn’t you tell me? I would’ve sat with you while you took the tests.”

“You would’ve watched me pee? That’s so sweet.”

He laughs and kisses my forehead. “You know what I mean.”

“It’s okay, really. I wanted to be sure before I told you.”

I can’t say I’m surprised that he doesn’t seem surprised. We knew this was a possibility. We stopped using condoms, relying solely on my birth control, but I fucked up. Soccer and classes have been kicking my ass, and I also secured an internship with the Astros this semester. The new schedule forced me to change my time when I was taking my pill every day and that led to me forgetting to take it at all. By the time we realized I had skipped an entire week and a half of pills, it was too late to take Plan B, so Kai just said to let it ride. So, here we are.

“Okay, so how are you feeling? Have you been sick?”

“No, I’m good. I’ve just been really tired and peeing every five seconds. Oh, and I’ve had some cramping but I still didn’t put it together until I missed my period. So,”—I take a deep breath— “what do you think we should do?”

He looks deep into my eyes and then he pushes away from me and turns so that our bodies are facing each other. “I…I don’t know. I want to know what you think because this affects you more.”

His answer is like a slap in the face. It affects me more? What the fuck does that mean?

I scoff. “You planning on going somewhere?”

His forehead crinkles. “Olivia, come on. You must be crazy if you think I would ever leave you. That’s not what I’m saying.”

“Then what are you saying, Kai?”

He grabs my hand again and I itch to shake him off of me, but I wait to see what he has to say first.

“I’m saying that you’re the one that has to carry the baby. I can’t do that for you. I love you, Olivia Harding. I’m always gonna be here, but at the end of the day it’s you who is gonna be doing the heavy lifting and that’s going to affect soccer. I don’t know when you would have to be benched, but I imagine you can’t run up and down the field with a big belly. And once you have the baby, I don’t know how long it’ll be before you can get back to it. I just don’t want you to regret this—the baby or me—if it ends up costing you your dream.”
