A Frenchman was arrested in the notorious town of Kitzbühel solely on the grounds that a chambermaid in the Double Eagle Hotel had accused him of trying to molest her when she had come, at his request, to serve him a triple cognac in his room around midnight; this the Frenchman, according to reports in the newspaper, categorically denied, calling it a base and malicious Alpine calumny. The Frenchman was a professor of German at the famous Paris Sorbonne and had intended to recover, in the Double Eagle Hotel in Kitzbühel, from the strain of completing a translation of Nietzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra that he had undertaken, which had occupied him for more than two years. However, the abrupt change from the climate of Paris to the climate of Kitzbühel had, in the nature of things, not been good for him, and the result of his hurried journey from France to the Tyrol had been a very bad case of the flu, which he had contracted immediately after his arrival in Kitzbühel and which had forced him to stay in bed for several days. As it was taken as proven that the French professor lacked all the preconditions for seducing the chambermaid, let alone for actually violating her, he was released from custody after a few hours, and he returned to the Double Eagle. The chambermaid was driven out of the Double Eagle, and when she discovered her picture in the newspaper with the caption A Disgraceful Kitzbühel Woman, she immediately drowned herself in the Inn River. The body has not been found to this day.
