  19. About the Author

PONY: Seriously. To think that you and me aren’t the greatest love story in the world. To think that we’re just kind of a mess, and we’re nice to each other, and we have fun sometimes.

JOHN: Yeah. That’s kind of hard to think about.

PONY: I’m sure there’s some saying about it. Where, since you can’t face that you’re not perfect, and not even close, you try to just make yourself into barely nothing. Do we do that?

JOHN: I do.

PONY: I know you hate talking like this.

JOHN: Do you know that thing about how we have all these atoms in us that were there in the Big Bang, when the Universe was formed?

PONY: Yeah. I saw that show with you, remember?

JOHN: Yeah. (Very brief pause) That’s such a great thing.

PONY: Yeah. (Brief pause) Do you have things you’re not telling me?

JOHN: No.

PONY: Good. You’re sure?

JOHN: No, there is one thing. (Very brief pause) I always worried I was going to disappear on you. Just totally leave you in the worst way. It made me feel sick to think it, and I thought it all the time.

PONY: You did?

JOHN: Yeah. I’m sorry.

PONY: Me too. I mean, I thought you might do that. You have that look.

JOHN: Yeah.

PONY: I thought I might too. I always saw myself leaving you. In a really ugly way. Or, just saying bye, and going. Or not saying bye.

JOHN: That’s a big relief.

PONY: Come on.

JOHN: No, it is.

PONY: I want to try to solve things with you.

JOHN: Like, crimes and mysteries? I would love that. We can get a van.

PONY: I like how you’re always joking around. Sometimes I hate it, though. I just want to solve a few little problems, with you, maybe like five a year.

JOHN: Four.

PONY: Five.

JOHN: Deal. Or, you know.

PONY: Yeah. (They kiss. Pause) We don’t have any friends or relatives.

JOHN: I know. That’s weird. There’s those guys. I talked with Jennifer, the other week. They were kind of preoccupied with him, because I guess he had to go to the hospital. I guess he hasn’t been doing too well.

PONY: That’s too bad.

JOHN (Very brief pause): They want to go out to dinner, sometime. She won a gift certificate.

PONY: That’d be fun. I love gift certificates.

JOHN: Try to enjoy my company during dinner, because I might take off before dessert. Just climb out the bathroom window and vanish into the night, laughing. Or just drop dead, into my salad.

PONY: I wouldn’t spend too much time planning, because I might not even show up at all. I’m a totally unreliable person who’s filled with terror.

JOHN: Maybe I’d hear that better if you whispered.
