Surprise registered in her eyes as her gaze flickered to him and then a wry grin tugged at her mouth. “Did you make this playlist for me?”

He paused the music and shook his head. “No, it’s the same one I always listen to when I work out. Why do you ask?”

Amusement spread across her face, reaching her eyes. “You listen to Britney Spears?”

He raised one brow. “Something wrong with that?”

“Not at all,” she said, grinning. “I guess I just didn’t expect it. You seem more like…the heavy metal type.”

“Well, I’ve got some Metallica and Megadeth on there, as well as some jazz, oldies, and even some of the King’s greatest hits.”

“Elvis?”

He nodded. “The one and only.”

“My dad would love you. He’s a huge Elvis fan.”

“I’m assuming that’s how you got your name?”

“Yep. He loved the King of Rock and Roll so much that he named his only daughter after him.”

“Your mom didn’t have anything to say about that?”

“Uh, no,” she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. “She…loved Elvis too.” Sadness filled her eyes.

Adam wasn’t sure why she suddenly seemed so forlorn, but he didn’t want to pry. It wasn’t any of his business, and if she wanted to share something with him, she would. He wasn’t pressuring her to do so. Instead, he chose to get her mind in a better place.

He leaned one hand against the arm of the treadmill. “Well, it was a good choice. I love your name.”

Her cheeks flushed. “Thanks,” she said, lowering her head. “I, uh…like it too.”

Ah, man. He hadn’t meant to make her blush. Was she not used to receiving compliments? Because if so, then he needed to correct that immediately.

But Adam changed the subject in order to keep them on track and force her to focus on something beyond whatever had put that heartrending look on her face. “You’re doing a brisk ten-minute warm-up to get those muscles primed, and then we’ll pick up speed. You ready?”

“Sure,” she said, nodding as she began walking on the treadmill at a moderate pace.

Adam hit the play button on the music and then set a ten-minute timer on his phone before moving off to the side several feet away. Knowing how self-conscious she was about others watching her, he didn’t want her to feel as though he was looming over her. Even if he couldn’t take his eyes off her.

Soon, the timer on his phone beeped, and he turned it off as he stepped toward the treadmill. “Good job. Now let’s kick up the pace and get you sweating.”

“I’m already sweating,” she said with a laugh.
