He headed in the same direction that Preslee had gone. He wasn’t sure what she was doing at the gym, but she clearly had an agenda. He’d never seen her looking so determined before.
Not only that, but she looked great. And it had nothing to do with her body. Instead, there was a newfound confidence in the way she moved. She held her head up high. Shoulders back. Arms swinging at her sides.
Adam found her standing in the locker room hallway, staring at the large scale he kept in the corner. Not only did she look like she had lost more weight since the last time he’d seen her, but she also looked…happy? Great. So things were probably not going to go the way he hoped they would.
Had she thought he wouldn’t be here? Or had she come to say goodbye for the last time?
Sighing, Adam said, “Preslee.”
Her head spun in his direction, and she bunched her fist onto her hip. “It’s about time you got over here. I thought I was going to have to come and get you.”
“You knew I was here?”
“Of course. It wasn’t hard to figure out. Your truck is parked directly out front.”
Okay, then. “So you aren’t avoiding me? Anymore, I mean?”
“No. Actually, I wasn’t really avoiding you to begin with. I just wasn’t coming into the gym anymore after we broke things off. But it’s not like I’ve been hiding out from you.”
He lifted one brow. “First off, we didn’t break things off. You did. I didn’t want things to end between us. Still don’t. But every time I went by the antique shop, your dad was always the one behind the counter, and you were nowhere to be found. He kept saying you weren’t available and giving me the runaround. I’m pretty sure he enjoyed every bit of it too.”
She smiled wide. “That’s my dad for you. I have no doubt he probably did enjoy it. He’s a bit overprotective when it comes to his only daughter. But he wasn’t lying to you, Adam. I wasn’t there any of the times you stopped by. I’ve been doing a lot of traveling with Josh recently, which has kept me pretty busy. That’s why you haven’t seen me around.”
Anger was like a flash flood flowing rapidly through his veins as it grew in strength. “I see,” he told her, his voice bordering on hostility. But then he stopped and shook it off. There was no point in getting upset with her since this was all his own fault. If he hadn’t lied to her, he wouldn’t have all but shoved her into Josh’s arms.
Damn if it didn’t sting though.
