Fuck. Adam closed his eyes. He couldn’t lie to her. So he lifted his gaze. “Yes.”
She clenched her fists. “That was intentional.”
He cringed. “Yes.”
“That’s what I thought.” Preslee shook her head. “You know what? It doesn’t matter anymore.”
“Don’t say that,” Adam replied, moving closer. God, he wanted to take her into his arms and make this all go away. “It matters. You matter…to me.”
One teardrop fell onto her cheek and slid beneath her jaw. “Yeah, I’m guessing that’s what you wanted me to believe last night when we slept together.”
Kurt’s surprised gaze darted to Adam, but he didn’t say anything. He hadn’t known they’d ended up in bed together. Well, he did now.
Preslee didn’t seem to notice the look Kurt gave Adam. Either that or she didn’t care. “I can’t believe I fell for that. Sleeping with you was such a big mistake. One I’ll never make again.”
“Don’t say that. You didn’t fall for anything. Last night meant something to me.”
“No, that was a charade. What was it? Were you afraid that I was going to put an end to our training sessions? After all, that would really put a damper on all this free promotion you’ve been getting. Is that why you had sex with me?”
“God, Preslee. It wasn’t like that. You have to believe me.”
She shook her head. “You’re wrong. I don’t have to believe anything you say. Not ever again. You told me last night that you had feelings for me. But that was a lie. Because if you did, you wouldn’t have ever done this.”
Fear caught his breath, and Adam cleared his throat. “I was trying to undo it. Do you remember earlier when I told you that I wanted to talk to you about something later? Well, this was it. I was going to confess everything. I didn’t want there to be any lies between us.”
She rolled her eyes, and sarcasm fell smoothly off her tongue. “Well, kudos to you for finally growing a pair. It only took you a month for your conscience to catch up with you. Impressive.” Sniffling, she whirled around, heading for the exit. Before she got there though, she stopped and turned back. “By the way, Adam, in case I haven’t made it clear enough for you, I never want to see you again. You’re fired.” Then she marched out the door.
Adam started after her, but Kurt stepped in front of him, blocking his path. Anger and betrayal rocketed through him at his best friend’s interference, and he fisted his hands at his sides. “Move.”
“No,” Kurt said, standing his ground. “She was right about me. I haven’t been a good friend to her. But I’m going to make up for that starting now. Let her go.”
