They tried to return to the movie, but no matter how much they increased the volume, it was no match for the vocal sexual encounter going on in the next apartment. But then the moaning suddenly changed, eerily mimicking the sound of a cat after someone’s stepped on its tail and the poor thing has to fight for its release.
Preslee winced. “That’s a horrific noise. Are you sure he’s not killing someone over there? You’re assuming he’s having sex, but he could be a murderer.”
“He’s not,” Adam said with a chuckle. “Man, your imagination is really out there at times.”
The entire wall shook as a man’s guttural voice pierced the air. “Oh yeah, baby. I’m gonna make you scream until you’re begging me to put you out of your misery.”
Preslee’s brow rose. “See? Murderer. Told you so.”
Adam shook his head. “You’re ridiculous.”
They went back to watching the movie, although they had to turn the captions on so they could read the rest of it. Hearing it was no longer an option. After another twenty minutes of earsplitting shrieking and explicit pounding, the lurid sexual activity finally ceased to exist.
“I think he ran out of fuel,” Adam told her.
“Well, it’s about time. If that went on any longer, that poor woman wouldn’t have been able to walk normally tomorrow.”
Adam chuckled. “I think that was what he was aiming for.”
Lucky girl.
Oh man. Had she really just thought that? Heat crawled up her neck, landing in her cheeks. She was blushing like a teenage girl who had just watched her first porn video. She needed to change the subject. Fast.
She inhaled a deep breath. “At least you’ll be saved from this torture next weekend.”
“How’s that?”
“Brett and Sidney’s wedding. With the reception taking place at Bottoms Up Saturday night, I’m sure there will be plenty of drinking and dancing to keep you busy into the wee hours. You and Kurt are still going, right?”
“Yeah, we’ll both be there. Wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
She beamed at him. “Good. It’ll be fun.”
Adam smirked. “Will your dad be there? I’m just wondering if I should wear Kevlar to the afterparty.”
She giggled. “No, he won’t be there. You’re safe…for now.”
“Good to know.”
She cocked her head. “What about your parents?”
“They won’t be there either,” Adam told her with a grin.
Indignation crossed her features. “I know that, funny guy. But that isn’t what I meant, and you know it. I was asking where they live.”
“Houston. It’s not far, but it’s enough distance to keep them off my back. Well, most of the time.”
Her expression dulled. “You mean because they don’t approve of you dropping out of med school?”
