Does. Inhumane is such a dirty word. The programmer is simply not interested in people. The programmer loves problem solving. He loves to solve problems that wouldn’t exist without the developments he is significantly—and he stresses the word significantly when thinking—involved in. The programmer loves the fact, therefore, that there is no fulfillment anticipated in his field. He hasn’t been granted fulfillment. He has just given the biometric division vital momentum in the area of emotional cognition. Ideas like that come to him around five in the morning. When he’s not sleeping. He can never sleep more than two hours, work on the computer has fucked up his central nervous system. But. He will soon try out one of those cortex stimulators. In one of the labs, Dr. Koch is working on them. Some shit with nanoparticles, cortex, mini-robots in the bloodstream. The programmer hasn’t had any time to inform himself about them yet. His twenty-hour day includes programming, chatting with other programmers, reading about cool stuff other programmers are programming, chats about games, chats about problems with programming, trial-and-error in programming, in short: the body is of no interest to the programmer. Same for the pseudo-futuristic cyborg efforts some of his colleagues are into. Loading his brain onto a chip and living on in a computer. What happens if it goes wrong? If you are inside yourself the way he is now, in his brain, looking out at the world, out of which you can disappear in an emergency. But, horror of horrors. If you’re stuck in a computer and can’t go anywhere, can’t shut yourself off, because you have no hands? What happens if people decide to humiliate you? When you’re stuck helpless inside some fucking machine?
