“Vapor,” I rasped, reaching for my phone on the counter but my hands shook too much when I lifted it. It dropped to the ground and the screen cracked, the light flickering off.
“Fuck,” I rasped, digging my fingers into my palms.
This was it. There was nothing I could do. So much for being a god.
I could feel my thoughts spinning in circles, going round and round, faster and faster. Schemes darted around in my head too fast to form into coherent plans. I was beyond manic, gritting my teeth with the roar of Greed filling my bloodstream.
My eyes drifted to the hallway. Through the haze of green, I managed to see a red light coming from under the door—neon and hazy. Words twirled in my head, memories whispering. My name over and over from soft lips, calling to me, begging me closer.
My feet dragged me into the dark hall and to the door.
“Lacey,” Lorcan said behind it. I took a deep breath and pressed my forehead against the wood.
“Are you okay?” I asked with a shaky voice.
“No,” he answered darkly. “Are you?”
“No,” I huffed out with a laugh that started normal but twisted and warped into something high-pitched and wild. The unmistakable sound of chains behind the door made me swallow the unhinged laughter.
“Dullahan chained you up?” I snapped, setting my fingers on the nob. “Do you need help? They said you didn’t want me around.” I heard him give a shaky sigh.
“Open the door, Lacey.” I twisted the doorknob and it swung open. It was dark inside other than the blue glow of the tv on the wall. Lorcan was laying on the bed, sprawled out in tight black pants and nothing else. He sat up and I saw he was chained to the bed by his ankle. His eyes bore into me, red and black.
“The key is in the living room, under the couch cushion in the middle,” he said, his tail resting on the sheets. The tip flicked and snapped like an agitated snake. I dragged my eyes away from it and nodded, rushing to retrieve it.
When I was in the living room my thoughts started to spiral again, a Ferris wheel gone out of control. A few times I nearly crawled to my room to fling myself in the pool of gold coins but somehow I managed to fish the key out from the cushions.
When I came back he was sitting on the edge of the bed, stretching his arms above his head. His tattoos and horns were out and his tail was draped across his thigh. I went to my knees beside the bed, my green fingers shaking so much I was struggling to get the key in the lock. He looked down at me between his thighs, his eyes trailing over my face and body as I worked.
“I insisted on being chained,” he explained. I frowned but said nothing. It was getting warmer in here. I felt slick and hot as I finally managed to get the key in the lock. Before I could twist the key, he threaded his fingers through my hair, pulling my head closer as he bent down. Our mouths touched and I sighed, my fingers shaking a little less. He hummed in pleasure and I moaned, my fingers gripping the edge of the bed.
