  39. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I headed towards the shifter club. I didn’t remember the exact whereabouts but I found my way there without a hiccup, guessing which street was the right way to go and always being right. The building was an old warehouse—tall, square and stout. A brick shithouse with a chimney clinging to the side. Rows of windows up high gave no sign of what was inside. They’d been boarded up from the inside, keeping any lights or sounds hidden from the street.

There was a row of fully chopped hogs parked in front, richly chromed with keys still dangling from a few. This was a rough part of town but the owners weren't concerned about theft. As I pulled up to the end of the bike line and killed the engine, the loud cry of a bird caught my attention. I looked up to see the same amazingly large black bird from North Hunan.

Glowing golden eyes looked down at me. Motherfucker. There was no way!

The bird cawed again, loud and powerful. Quickly, I moved into the club with the sensation of eyes on my neck. What was going on? Was the bird following me? Was that red-haired man after me? Why did that gangster from last night, Viktor, have the same gold eyes as this bird? I had no idea. I’d never heard of a bird shifter but the world was large.

It felt like paranoia to be entertaining these connections. Was my Greed getting worse?

Why did I even care if I was being tailed? My luck could get me out of anything. I held on to that thought as I pushed through the dark hallway entrance to the club. It had no lights and if one didn’t notice the lack of dust, they might think this place really was an abandoned warehouse. I found myself facing a metal door that I peeled open. Flashing neon blinded me while a sudden roar from the crowd surged, deafening me for a second. I stepped inside, closing the door behind me, sealing myself into Fenrir.

Bodies rubbed against mine as music pulsed around me. The club was alive and thriving despite the early hour. It wasn’t like a normal shifter bar, gritty and run down. This was a full-on city club aimed to bring in everyone looking to party in our city of sin. It was the supernatural club in town and as far as I knew it was the only true club in the industrial district. Which made it the perfect location to get up to no good.

Humans wandered in enough that everything wasn’t out in the open though. The truth about the supernatural was a poorly kept secret in our city but we tried at least.

Lights flashed, the music throbbed with bass, and the dance floor was crammed with bodies bouncing up and down as the DJ riled the crowd with his music. The music bled into my body until I felt it in my marrow, making my excitement pick up to the beat. I dropped my coat at coat check, not at all worried about the fae vapor inside. Really, I never worried much. Which made this sensation of being followed novel and honestly…thrilling, even if nerve-wracking. I couldn’t slake my thirst for thrill.
