  39. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I leaned on the glass, pressing my forehead against the cool, smooth texture. My breath fogged it and I drew a frowny face with the tip of my index finger. I couldn’t see much of anything out there, just darkness and heavy rain swirling and whipping in the gusts. The ocean had become a swollen threat as night fell. It loomed off the coast, slowly creeping ever closer.

The lurking storm was powerful and hungry and this island was at the top of the menu. The news said the beach resort on the southeast was already under six feet of storm surge.

The glass window cracked. There was a microsecond, the briefest little moment that allowed me to realize what had happened, and then the window broke entirely. I was still leaning on it as it gave away a hundred floors above the ground.

My scream was swallowed by the sudden roar of the storm all around me. My hair whipped around as I fell forward. My stomach plummeted and then I slammed into the wrought iron of the French balcony railing, stopping my fall. There was a bloody cut on my arm from a sharp metal edge where part of the railing had been damaged. Better red than dead, I thought. Guess I still had a wee bit of luck.

The rain washed away the blood. The roar of the storm was like a great beast snarling and growling. There was another noise though…

I gripped the railing and looked down. The occasional lightning strike allowed me a dim, intermittent view of the ground. The noise came again.

Screams and gunshots. Then a wail from the undead.

I’d been informed that shortly after Remington fled, a small group of zombies showed up, banging on our doors. The longer they were there, the bigger the crowd of them got. I had no idea how many were down there now but they wouldn’t stay outside for very much longer. The storm doors were up so maybe they wouldn’t get in. Considering the state of my luck, I wasn’t hopeful.

I left the balcony, drenched and shivering in the wet and the wind. The silk peach lingerie clung to my skin as I made my way to the kitchen to find a first aid kit. At least I thought that might be where someone might keep one? I had no idea. I'd never needed one before.

I didn’t bother turning on the lights as I washed the wound. I pressed a towel to it, putting pressure. I gasped as I saw two green orbs glowing in the windows. Then I realized it was my eyes glowing.

“No, no, no,” I said, my hands shaking. I looked down at the green crawling all over me. I swallowed thickly. Remington had taken my luck, but apparently, he hadn’t taken my Greed. And with zero luck and all the greed in the world…

I was fucked.

I growled, gritting my teeth. Everything was turning green, the condo awash in it. I needed my gold. Really, I needed my entire horde around me but most of it was safely hidden away, off this island.
