- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Business concluded, I didn’t stick around to hear them drag me some more. I headed for the door and down the stairs, my gaze aimed at the table.
The empty table.
I tensed before hearing familiar voices coming from the couch. Looking over, I watched Mac throw her head back to laugh. Her smile was big, her cheeks flushed. She looked happy and so damn pretty, it hit me in the chest.
In the heart.
Before I even knew it, I was walking toward her, drawn like a moth to a flame.
Or a moth to a bug zapper if I couldn’t get her to take a chance on me. ’Cause that rejection would kill, slow and painful.
When I got closer, the scene unfolding on the couch also hit me in the empty stomach and resentful taste buds.
There she sat with O, thick as fuckin’ thieves. Thieves who were eating the cupcakes we were supposed to share.
“You gave her my halves,” I accused, fighting a smile.
“You said they were mine,” Mac said.
“And you said you’d share while we watched House.”
She shrugged. “I changed my mind.”
I turned my glare to Ophelia. “First Swedes’s waffles, now my share of cupcakes. Ruthless.”
She didn’t take it as an insult. Her smile was nearly as smug as her husband’s. “And don’t you forget it.”
“Did I hear my name?” Swedes asked, approaching with a beer.
“Yeah, I was cursing it for the way you spoil O, leaving me to starve.” I held my arms out. “I’m wasting away.”
Swedes smacked my stomach. “You’re right. I only felt an eight-pack, not ten.”
“See? Already skin and bones.” Turning toward the couch, I hooked a thumb to the side. “Baby, this is Swedes. Swedes, Mac.”
Mac smiled at him. “Swedes. My hero.”
“Neighbor…” I drawled, the word filled with warning, though it was bullshit.
The grin she shot me was all mischief and snark, and fuck if it didn’t make me hard. “Okay, fine, not my hero.” Her words were contradicted by her rapid nodding. “But I do appreciate the food you’ve sent my way.” She patted her stomach. “My baby does, too. The fried chicken was the best thing I’ve ever eaten.”
Swedes bristled, his gaze darting to the crumpled cupcake wrapper. “Was?”
“The spicy hummus dethroned it. Plus, it made my baby roll around for the first time, so it’ll always hold a special place in my stomach and heart.”
Hell. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say the rough biker next to me looked a little misty-eyed.
Not that I had room to talk. It’d been hard not to get choked up at the ultrasound.
“Anything you want, sweetheart. Cravings, snacks, dinners. Whatever it is.” Swedes gestured to Ophelia. “Mayhem women know all they gotta do is ask ’cause we’re here to spoil.”
