  123. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

While we waited for Lash, I told Jury about the raisin cookies from Piper. It’d been easy to let those go. I also told Swedes about the box for him, but it was grudgingly ’cause I knew that shit would be good.

When Lash finally showed, he took his seat. “What’d I miss?”

“Hollywood is in love with his neighbor,” Jury shared.

Like the others, Lash didn’t even blink. “Yeah, we knew that from the way he’s been walking around with that dopey smile on his face.”

“I said it’s cartoon hearts shooting out of his eyes,” Swedes put in.

“Yeah, that, too.”

“Oh, fuck off, all of you,” I said, even though I was the one who’d started it. I just thought it’d been shocking. It’d been pretty fuckin’ groundbreaking to me, dammit. “Can we get to business now?”

“Good idea.” Judge grabbed a beer from the beverage fridge. “I’m sure you wanna hurry so you can pass Mac a note to see if she likes you, too.”

Jesus…

That was the last of them giving me shit. Judge took his seat at the head of the table, and the vibe in the room instantly sobered.

“Beth, our Beverly job, called to say her husband’s schedule changed. Extraction is moved up to this Thursday,” he announced.

“Two days?” Scythe gave a low whistle. “Lots to do before then.”

“Already got a minivan booked. Haze is gonna drive that with the mom and kids. Hollywood, you take our van. Rest of us will be on bikes, covering the front and back. Good news is, she has family outside of Albany. Should be able to get them there before the fucker even knows they’re gone.”

Glitch turned his tablet. “I’ve got three routes mapped out, depending on traffic and construction. They’ll be on the app.” He kept clicking through to screenshots. “I dug into their digital footprints. His is virtually nonexistent. Hers is mostly pictures of her kids and a shit-ton of dinner recipes saved on social media. According to his LinkPass, the dickwad’s schedule has been consistent with taking the T home late at night.”

“Good, that means our original plan still works. Just moved up a week.” Judge looked at his brother. “Swing by the store and get a car seat that works for a two-year-old. We’ll install it before we go ’cause I don’t wanna waste time once we get there.”

Jury raised his chin. “On it.”

“I’ll come with, get the kids some toys and shit,” Scythe said, always a damn softie under his scarred shell.

We went through the whole thing again ’cause Mayhem didn’t fuck around when it came to those kinda jobs.

“Anything else changes,” Judge said, “I’ll be in touch. Otherwise, we meet here Thursday at seven.”
