- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
That was probably closer to the truth—if we counted lies by omission.
“I know you probably think you know her, but you don’t. She’s down at the precinct with my captain because she fears for her life. Something about a dangerous motorcycle club.” He raised a brow and lowered his voice. “Something about a man in a coma.”
It took everything in me not to rock back.
Her asking to go to the club all of a sudden. Asking about what we did. About me.
Her finally showing an interest in my life.
“It sounds like she’s been watching too many gritty dramas,” he went on. “We get a lot of that. The best thing you can do for yourself is steer clear. You’ve got to be careful who you trust.”
“Yeah,” I gritted out slowly. “You do.”
“Contact your attorney, and he’ll walk you through the process. But like I said, until we figure this out, I need you to leave.”
I was about to slam the door in his face when he put his hands in his pockets, casually pushing his suit coat out of the way to expose a pair of cuffs and his piece.
A warning.
“Gimme a minute to get my shit.”
I backed into the house and closed the door partially. I didn’t need him getting trigger happy.
Pulling my cell out, I called Mac—Jane?
She didn’t answer.
What the ever-lovin’ fuck is going on?
The front door pushed open before I could try again. The man still looked relaxed, but his hand had dropped to rest on his gun. “Ready?”
Didn’t exactly have a choice about it.
Locking the door, I kept my eyes aimed ahead as I walked to my car. I didn’t even glance at Mac’s place. Had no doubt that if I took a step toward it, I’d be in cuffs and tossed in the back of his car.
And that was if I was lucky.
Betrayal hit me so damn hard, I could taste it. Bitter.
Foul.
Getting in my car, I called Judge.
He answered on the second ring. “You on your way?”
“Where’s your wife?” I asked instead of answering.
“Shopping with your woman.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah, why?”
My shoulders loosened. “I’ll explain later. Find out where they are.”
With that reassurance, I backed out of my driveway. The cop leaned on the boring-ass sedan parked a few houses down, watching me go.
I had no clue which direction I was supposed to be heading, but I drove anyway. Ten minutes passed before my phone rang.
“What’s—”
“She’s not with O.”
My body went tight. “What?”
“Just got ahold of O. She said Mac texted that she wasn’t feeling well.”
Shit.
Fuckin’ fuck.
“What’s going on?” Judge asked.
“Damned if I know. But I’m gonna find out.”
