- A Conversation with Leila Meacham
- ALSO BY LEILA MEACHAM
But the strategy hadn’t worked. Alistair had been daily amazed at how five strangers who knew absolutely nothing about one another could so quickly fit together as a cohesive unit, almost like a pack, not a lone wolf among them. He noticed their budding closeness at meal times, in classrooms, in grueling training sessions, during rare moments of leisure.
When the vetting process had unearthed no sweethearts back home, Alistair had feared the situation presented fertile ground for romance sprouting, never a good thing. They were all single, uncommonly attractive, and eligible for the picking. Had he not been familiar with their backgrounds, Alistair would have wondered why they were still footloose and fancy free. Brad Hudson had been too busy working and caring for his family to get involved with a girl and couldn’t afford one anyway. Bridgette Loring had been too career focused to become involved in a serious relationship, and Sam Barton had confessed to a nasty breakup with his girlfriend—bitter for her but sweet for him—just after his twenty-second birthday, Alistair assumed right before his meeting with him in the coffee shop. “Girls! Who needs them with a war on?” he’d declared. Victoria Grayson was feeling the loss of her fighter pilot and Christoph Brandt the rejection of the Texas girl he’d expected to marry, and neither was interested in seeking solace in other arms.
Alistair had thought the girls might be jealous of each other and the boys would square off in competition for their attention, but neither had happened. Their chemistry simply hadn’t worked that way. They had settled for friendship, the truest kind, because they had met denuded of their names, families, occupations, backgrounds, level of education, and accomplishments. Shed of embellishments, you were what you were and you got what you saw. The team of Dragonfly had come stripped to the bone and liked what they saw, and that was all there was to it. No further analysis required.
As a case officer, Alistair couldn’t be more pleased. He had put together the perfect package for the mission. He simply hadn’t counted on his regret at his success. He lifted his hand to signal for another club soda and thought back on how it had all started, the bonding of Dragonfly. It began the morning the potential candidates for induction into the OSS boarded the bus to Station S.
