- A Conversation with Leila Meacham
- ALSO BY LEILA MEACHAM
The major general turned, and a fractional smile relaxed the ruminative lines of a ruggedly attractive, middle-aged face. “Herr Bauer, Konrad March, Wilhelm’s father. You instruct Wilhelm in field sports and mathematics,” he said, approaching Chris with outstretched hand.
“That is correct, Herr Major General,” Chris said.
“I’ve come to discuss a matter with you regarding him.”
“I am most happy to be of service.”
Immediately, the German residents who had gathered to read and listen to the phonograph this Sunday afternoon snapped shut their books, folded their newspapers, turned off the record player, and quietly left the room. General March drew the tails of his overcoat about him and sat down in one of the vacated chairs without appearing to take notice. It seemed generally understood that men of his rank and power were to be granted privacy.
The general indicated that Chris take a seat and began without preliminaries. “Last Sunday afternoon, I met with Herr Louis Mueller, director of the physical education program at your academy,” he said, “and I did not like what I heard or saw. I’ve decided it’s best to withdraw Wilhelm from the school and put his education into the hands of private tutors.”
“I will miss him, sir.”
“Not if you undertake to tutor my son in mathematics at my home three days a week after completion of your school duties. The thirty minutes the school allots to the study of mathematics are simply not enough. Wilhelm likes and trusts you. I hope you will consider it. I would pay you well.”
Chris maintained a polite, mildly surprised expression. Before a man trained in reading facial expressions and body language, he must not betray his elated shock over this intelligence plum to fall into his lap. He would like to be a fly on the wall when Major Renault received the message that Lapwing—Claus Bauer—had gained access to the home of the head of the Abwehr in France. His case officer would not believe his luck.
“Should I give you time to think about it, Herr Bauer?”
Chris was aware that the question was asked out of courtesy. Unless he had a very good excuse to refuse the general’s offer, he was expected to accept it. “I do not believe that is necessary, Herr Major General,” he said. “I would be honored to undertake the tutoring of mathematics to your son. I shall look forward to it.”
The general rose. “Excellent. Here is my address card.” Chris got to his feet to accept it and the offer of the general’s hand. “Tomorrow afternoon, then?”
Chris nodded. “Tomorrow afternoon.”
