- A Conversation with Leila Meacham

“You’ve given us a lot to digest,” Bucky said.
Henri whirled a hand as if directing a plane in for a risky landing. “What is there to digest?” he asked incredulously. “You are all in danger of discovery!”
“Actually, I’m not so sure that’s true of me,” Brad said.
“Or of me, either,” Chris remarked.
“What difference does that make?” Henri looked thunderstruck. “Do you not see the grocer’s pyramid of lemons you have here? You all know too much about the others. Pull one from the stack, and all come tumbling down.” He demonstrated his point with a downward motion of his hands and leaned forward with the earnestness of an attorney urging his clients to take a plea bargain. “I beg you to consider no other choice but to leave Paris. Major Renault instructed me to tell you that this may be your only opportunity to get out. You are young. You have your full lives ahead of you, and you’ve already served your country valiantly and well. There would be no shame in pulling out. And—” Henri drew in a breath “—may I remind you what will happen to you if you are caught? How will you feel if you’re made to betray the others?”
Another solemn silence met this very real horror. When none spoke, Bridgette made a polite sound in her throat to indicate she’d speak for all of them. “A little time to think about it—in private?” she said quietly.
Henri shook his head and pushed back his chair. Ah, moi! he thought. This is not good, not good at all. “As you wish. I will wait in the other room, but don’t take too long. I must report to Major Renault in regard to the Lysanders.”

A tense silence gripped the room. Eyes were down, no one looking at any other. The candle burned ominously, throwing the circle of faces around the table into the cast of a group assembled for a séance. Finally Bridgette gathered a breath and spoke. “Like the man said, guys, we don’t have much time. Who wants to go first?”
“I suggest it be you, Labrador,” Bucky said. “Without you, the rest of us have to pack our bags.”
All nodded agreement, even Victoria, who had sat through the whole proceedings like a figure cast in marble.
“Same goes for you guys,” Bridgette said. “My mission here is over once you leave, but if only one of you stays, then I do, too.”
They remained silent, keeping their attention on her as if expecting her to take the lead. “Okay,” she said, accepting her cue. “We’ve heard some very disturbing news, so may I suggest we take a vote by a show of hands? Who, without discussion, right now at this moment, wants to head for the door?”
No hand went up.
