The chief of the Abwehr in France, careless? Maybe, maybe not. Wild Bill had been ecstatic over the intel. At Milton Hall, the SOE had brought out the champagne, but Alistair’s nose, equal to his unimpeachable gut, had caught a waft of something about it that he didn’t like.

The other odors drifting out of Paris were as worrisome. The plethora of highly secret material Victoria was feeding them—how was she coming by it? Colonel Derrick Albrecht should have already picked up on Victoria’s native tongue by now. Why hadn’t she been arrested? Same for Bridgette, if the policeman had caught on to the clandestine activities going on behind his back. Alistair questioned why the American turncoat had not squealed on Sam Barton to his superiors, and why Brad and Chris had not been rolled up. Aware that he had left top secret material on his home desk, it stood to reason that they would be the first persons the general would suspect of leaking the information to the Allies, but they remained untouched. Why?

None of it made sense to a spymaster familiar with the sleights of hand, the illusions, the trickeries of play in the espionage game. His nose, his gut, told him that his kids were either being played by high-level Nazis working against the regime or being set up in a cat-and-mouse game in which they were the mice in a cage of ocelots, their wiles and wits their only defense of play.

The Game

CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE

CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE

The week of November 9, 1942, broke fair and calm. Sunny days and fluffy clouds afloat in a sea of blue skies offered respite from the former dark weeks of dripping rain. While the German Army, in violation of a 1940 armistice, expanded its occupation of France by seizing Vichy France, the country’s supposed Free Zone, other war news held slivers of hope that the Allies were making headway against the Axis powers. In North Africa, German-occupied Algeria, a province of France, was liberated by U.S. troops with the assistance of a band of French Resistance fighters. In the Pacific, the Americans won a decisive victory against the Japanese on Guadalcanal. In Libya, the British Eighth Army recaptured Tobruk, a port city strategic to the Germans’ plan to move into Cairo and take over the Suez Canal.
