- A Conversation with Leila Meacham

Derrick stubbed out his cigar. “Well, Detective, I am afraid I have to disappoint you, but representatives of the United States Army will be here at any moment to collect me for interrogation, and I am afraid their custody takes priority over yours.”
“I am afraid I have to disappoint you, Colonel,” Maurice said, and handed him the arrest warrant. “It is a matter of international law that when a crime is committed against a country’s private citizen by a member of an invading army not in accordance with his military duty or orders, that country’s jurisdiction takes precedence over any other consideration. The information is there in the warrant. Therefore, we must ask you gentlemen to come with us. I have policemen posted outside your door if you should decide to make this difficult.”
Maurice had the strangely doubtful pleasure of seeing the SS colonel’s handsome face lose a degree of color. No matter his part in the despicable organization in which he had served, something about the man impressed the hell out of him, which could not be said of his view of the author Beaumont Fournier.
“That won’t be necessary, Inspector,” Derrick said, buttoning his jacket and straightening his tie, “but I have a very important request that I had intended to make of the American authorities, who are on their way now. It is a matter of freeing a young woman, a United States citizen and a member of the American OSS, from a chateau in the countryside. She has been confined there since June eleventh. And you are making a mistake in arresting Sergeant Brunner. Whatever you feel you can prove against me, he had no hand in it. Though I found the sergeant an exemplary aide in military matters these many years, I have never involved him in my private affairs, alleged or otherwise.”
The aide uttered a startled grunt, whether at the news of the American citizen at the chateau or the colonel’s defense of him, Maurice could not tell, perhaps both. “That remains to be reviewed, Colonel,” Maurice said. “Sergeant Brunner is to come with us, and I assume you are speaking of Mademoiselle Veronique Colbert.”
“The very one.”
“I am sure we can take care of that matter from our headquarters as expediently as possible.” He opened the door to admit the men waiting in the hall. “Gentlemen, if you please,” he said, nodding toward Derrick and Karl.
