- A Conversation with Leila Meacham
- ALSO BY LEILA MEACHAM
However, before he pursued her further, he must see how she lived. He was a tidy man himself, some would say excessively so, and no matter the depth of his admiration for a woman (not that he’d had contact with many—none, as a matter of fact), he would find it impossible to commit himself to her if she did not possess his passion for cleanliness and order.
The convent was virtually empty. Now was the time to put his questions to the test about Mademoiselle Bernadette Dufor. He crept up the stairs without being seen and let himself into her attic room.
She passed the exam. All was as Achim had hoped, dreamed. His affection and desire for the adorable, petite Bernadette Dufor grew by the minute. Perhaps if they should marry, the convent would consider the antique armoire against the wall as a wedding present. It was a fine piece—fifteenth century, he guessed. A corner stuck out a bit, a distraction to the eye. He would line it up properly before making for the fire escape.
He spotted the floor-to-ceiling hairline crack in the wall behind the armoire and thought at first that the chest had been placed there to conceal an eyesore. Then he looked more closely, remembering what he had read of the secret nooks the English called “priest holes,” built in old monasteries and convents throughout France to hide members of the aristocracy seeking to escape the guillotine during the French Revolution. Today, they were used to hide Jews on the run. He had time to spare. He had better look. He moved the armoire farther away from the wall and gave the hairline fissure a push. A door swung back.
Holy Mother of Christ!
It was indeed a cleverly concealed entrance to a priest hole. No smell of human occupancy drifted out. Curious, Achim stepped inside and saw in the darkness an object on a table that froze him stiff as a stick. He was standing thus when voices reached him from downstairs. Quickly, hardly able to tear his gaze away from the evidence of Mademoiselle Bernadette Dufor’s betrayal of all his fantasies and hopes, Achim backed out, closed the door, and returned the armoire to the exact position in which he’d found it before dashing out by the attic’s fire escape.
