- A Conversation with Leila Meacham
- ALSO BY LEILA MEACHAM
The situation was as clear to Brad as a Rocky Mountain stream. He held Wilhelm a little longer, the child’s heart beating hard against his chest, then set him down and took hold of his hand. “You bet I have, buddy,” he said. A surly boy and girl a few years older than Wilhelm had emerged to hang on to their mother at the door. Bullies to the core, Brad summed them up. Wilhelm wouldn’t have stood a chance in that household. He said to Helga Wolfe, “Show me Wilhelm’s room and I’ll pack his things.”
It was done in ten minutes, Wilhelm sticking close to his side. The aunt stayed downstairs. The children hovered in the doorway of Wilhelm’s closet-sized room, mean little eyes alight with curiosity. “Where are you taking him?” the boy asked.
“As far away from you as possible,” Brad answered.
It occurred to Brad as they were on the metro to present themselves to the American embassy that Helga Wolfe had never even looked at her brother-in-law’s letter. He glanced at Wilhelm tucked beside him like an abused pup having found a safe shelter. Brad put his arm around him and drew him closer.
With the three boys and little Wilhelm now safe, Alistair felt the blessed relief that only a case officer and a runner of foreign operatives can know when his agents come home from enemy territory in one piece. Each and every one counted with him, but there were some whose safe returns struck a special chord in his heart. The same was true for their loss. The execution of Victoria Grayson and presumed death of Bridgette Loring would be a lasting grief. His radio operator’s trail had ended at 93 Rue Lauriston in the sixteenth arrondissement, headquarters of the French Gestapo. Henri had managed to snuggle up to a female clerk working in the building who’d been willing to spill the little she knew of the petite blonde who sat for hours awaiting interrogation in the hallway, but she could supply no further knowledge. Mademoiselle Bernadette Dufor’s name was not listed in the Carlingue’s records of the dead or incarcerated. Inquiries from the organization’s interrogators had yielded nothing. No coworker recognized the name Bernadette Dufor. The woman had simply disappeared.
