“However, I have something more…” Madame Dupree reached within a coat pocket to pull out an object that Victoria recognized as the RAF version of an American dog tag. “I found this in Peter Billings’s possession before we buried him,” she said and held it out. “Would this be the identity tag of your fiancé, mademoiselle?”
Victoria took the single brown disc threaded with a cord and stared at the inscription that stated the name, service number, and religious affiliation of Lieutenant Ralph W. DuPont. Slowly, her eyes stinging, she nodded.
“I assume Monsieur Billings removed it to give to the pilot’s family, but died himself before he could deliver it,” Madame Dupree said. She stood and addressed Victoria’s bent head. “Remember the name Group Captain Gavin Longworth. He was from Lewes in East Sussex. After the war, you may wish to visit him to learn more about the death of your loved one.”
She had walked away before Victoria knew she was gone. Tears forming, Victoria ran her fingers over the back of the engraved disc that had lain against the chest of the man she loved. She brought it to her lips and held it there. The RAF identification tags came in pairs, the octagonal green one to be left on the body and the circular brown one to be taken to record the death. Where was he buried, her beloved? In what field, what village, what churchyard? She would not leave him there. After the war, she would track down Group Captain Gavin Longworth to find Ralph’s burial place and bring her love home.
Church bells were announcing that Sunday services were over. She must go. She slid the leather piece deep into her pocket, tears rolling down her cheeks. She could go home now. She’d gotten the answer she’d come to Paris to find, and now her discoveries of Lodestar’s address and Madame Dupree’s association with the OSS put them in danger if she were caught and made to talk. It was her duty to report her discoveries to the major and remove herself from Dragonfly.
But how could she go home and leave to the others the work that might help the Allies win the war, the reason that Ralph had joined the RAF?
No. Her duty was here, where her beloved had died. She would leave it to Lodestar to report their chance meeting to the major.
