To Hans’s questions, Brad answered yes, yes, and twenty-six. He had graduated Regis University, a prestigious Catholic institution in Colorado, and was studying to become a priest. Again tears clouded Hans’s eyes. “His father would be proud,” he said.
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED ONE
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED ONE
Are we ready?”
“We’re ready.”
“Then let’s go,” Bridgette said.
It was the afternoon of Sunday, the twenty-third of September, 1962. Alistair and the team of Dragonfly had registered at the Hotel La Rose throughout the day on Saturday and assembled for dinner that night. It had been a sober meeting lightened by reports from Brad and Chris and Bucky of their reunions with the people they’d flown in early to see. Chris had even managed to find the farmhouse whose owners had hidden him from the Germans at the risk of their lives the night he’d landed in France. The couple was gone, the farm now run by the teenaged son who’d been complicit in concealing him in the hayloft, but the grown man well remembered the experience of the boy.
Bucky had visited Madame Dupree, who still ran her boardinghouse, but the property was up for sale. “I’m too worn out and out of patience to run it anymore,” she told him. “The males of this current generation…they are not made of the stuff of the men of your youth.” When she’d opened the door to him, the brave, worn face that had seldom been touched by a smile, at least not when Bucky had known her, had registered such an explosion of recognition that it was like the sudden burst of sun over a dark landscape. She cried his name and cupped his cheeks between her palms. “I must make sure that you are real,” she said. “My hands will tell me what my eyes cannot believe.”
Bridgette added a touching report of her own. The day before, she had visited the House of Boucher and was spotted by one of the designers still around. Bridgette had not meant to make herself known, but the designer had been genuinely glad to see her and insisted on taking her up to the showroom. Displayed on the wall under glass for all to see were drawings of Bridgette’s fashion designs, including those with which she’d worked miracles to reshape the lumpy body of Madame Richter. “It was Madame Boucher’s wish that the drawings remain there always as a lasting tribute to your talent and courage, Mademoiselle Dufor,” she said.
