- A Conversation with Leila Meacham

He had acquiesced with warm understanding, expressed his hope to see her the next Sunday, and left her standing before one of the most elegant hotels in the world, a fitting backdrop for a woman of her regality. He had ordered his driver to make a U-turn on Rue Saint-Honoré and headed back to 84 Avenue Foch, headquarters of the Sicherheitsdienst, where his office had a view of the Arc de Triomphe. He had work to do. Mademoiselle Colbert had not asked him a single question about himself. Under the circumstances of her forced presence, even the most impeccable manners did not require her to do so. It had amused him to hold back information that would have tripped her up and exposed her as the fraud she was right on the spot, but he preferred to wait to discover what she was up to. It could be that she was an innocent sojourner caught in Paris at the German invasion of France and had assumed a false identity as her only form of protection. Why would she not? But if she had been of the mood to make the inquiries usual to two strangers sharing a luncheon table, he might have told her that he, SS Standartenführer Derrick Albrecht of the Sicherheitsdienst, had enjoyed the privilege of spending a year in her country as a graduate student at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and knew an American when he met one.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
By the following Sunday, October 18, working on her mural before reporting to the fashion house and after returning to the convent, Bridgette’s canvas of stone came to life with all the details that mattered. The broad head of a Golden Labrador with its chiseled features peered nobly through a stand of rushes at a dragonfly hovering over a lily pad afloat in a pond of blue water. A number of pencil-thin liverworts sprawled along its watery edge close to where a black-and-white wading bird, crowned with its species’s splendid crest, stood surveying its domain. The cup-shaped shell of a limpet clung to an algae-covered rock buried among fronds, and a faint impression of the North Star still showed in the early morning sky. Against a background of subtle corals and various greens, soft blues, and luscious hues of purple and aqua, the code symbols of Labrador, Liverwort, Lapwing, Limpet, and Lodestar were in place.
Under the eye of the French flic lurking close by, passersby all through the week had stopped to wonder, and some to ask the artist, what the painting was meant to state. “Whatever you wish it to,” Bridgette had answered with a smile.
