“Well, you pretty much always wear your hair in a bun anyway, so I don’t know that much will change for you.”

“Mom!”

“It’s just a place to stay, Iris. We’ll be out of here in no time.”

As I stepped over the threshold and into the open-floor-plan kitchen, dining room, and living room that looked over the pool and then to the ocean, I had to admit I was kind of impressed.

“Wow. It’s so pretty,” I said.

“Oh, honey,” said Alice, who I hadn’t even noticed coming down the steps, “that’s so nice.”

I studied her. Three dead husbands, I remembered. She seemed nice enough. But I reminded myself not to get too close. If my dad debacle—and Juniper Shores Socialite—had taught me anything, it was that adults had secret lives.

For now, I would play a part. I would help my mom. But let’s get one thing straight: I’d be sleeping with one eye open.

You didn’t hear it from me, but…

PIC 1: We’ve heard that Charlotte Sitterly put the “char” in charges this week when she failed to appear at her husband’s arraignment. Innocence 101? Have your grieving wife appear distraught and very, very virtuous at your first court appearance. We hate to say it but… her lack of court appearance didn’t exactly do Bill any favors!

PIC 2: Juniper Shores Prep’s favorite tennis coach seems to have slinked off into the night, leaving no trace and no word—not even for us! Could the rumors about his alleged affair with a now-graduated senior star who’s making the pro-am tournament rounds be true? Either way, he didn’t even say goodbye. Come on, Coach: We know love means “nothing” in tennis, but does it mean nothing in real life either?

PIC 3: It seems that perhaps our darling Growing with Grace’s divorce rumors might be true. Troy doesn’t seem to be coming home anytime soon, and the most telltale sign of all… Grace was spotted on the beach sans whopping diamond—with the damning un-tan white line of a recently removed ring to prove it. We’ll keep our eyes peeled. In the meantime, let the rumors about who will be next to snag everyone’s favorite domestic goddess commence!
