‘Yórùbas are traditionally polygamous,’ Julius explained. ‘It’s less common now, because Christian ministries disapprove and women won’t stand for it. But a few rich men still take more than one wife. My grandpa had seven over the course of his life, which is why I have a trillion cousins …’
‘Planning to run off explains why he’s not bothered about your family,’ Georgia noted. ‘And if Nanna worked at WADB, it must be her who put him in touch with Eddie.’
Julius nodded. ‘It also explains why SJ wants my mum in prison. She has contacts everywhere. If she was in the wild, she’d sniff out the truth and come down on my uncle like a hammer.’
‘So why is SJ still in Nigeria?’ Georgia asked. ‘He had a villa, fifty million and a hot Norwegian girlfriend.’
‘I’ve heard estimates my family is worth close to a billion dollars,’ Julius noted. ‘Most of that is in my mum’s companies. SJ probably wants to get his mitts on some of that before he skips town.’
‘Does this change your plan?’ Georgia asked, hoping Julius might stay longer.
He thought for a few seconds. ‘This information fills in a lot of blanks,’ Julius said. ‘But as nice as this resort is, I’m going crazy waiting for the rest of my life to start.’
SIXTY-NINE
Georgia felt like running to clear her head, but Julius was going home, she had to go back to her nan’s to start school and this was their last day to hang out.
Julius had two suitcases packed and ready to roll. A smaller third case and the thick briefcase Miles had left behind lay on the end of his bed.
‘I’m taking the details for my Nigerian bank account and six of the prepaid Visa cards,’ Julius explained. ‘The rest of my documents are in this briefcase and I want you to look after it for me. If I phone or message and I call you Georgia, that means everything is fine. If I call you Miss Pack, that means I’m probably being tortured for bank account details by one of my uncle’s thugs and you should ignore any instructions I give you.’
Georgia looked anxious. ‘You really think your uncle might hurt you?’
‘I’ll do my best to avoid that,’ Julius said, trying to smile reassuringly. ‘SJ won’t be happy when he finds I’ve stolen his nest egg, but I have extra leverage now I know he’s planning to leave his wives and run away. And he can’t take my money if all the documents are here with you.’
‘You trust me?’ Georgia asked.
Julius half-smiled, then shrugged. ‘I have to trust someone. If I disappear, wait a year, then contact Miles and tell him to donate the money to charity.’
