‘It’s pretty self-explanatory,’ Miles said. ‘It’s easier to hide money in a company than under a person’s name, so I’ve purchased two ready-made companies and split your money between them. One in Bermuda, one in the Cayman Islands. I’ve also opened a personal bank account for you in Nigeria and typed up instructions for securely transferring money from the companies when you need to spend it. I currently know all your passwords, PINs and security questions, but you can change them if you wish. There are also prepaid Visa cards for an emergency.’
‘How does that work?’ Julius asked.
Miles pulled a padded envelope from behind nylon mesh in the briefcase lid. It contained twenty cellophane wallets and he ripped one open, revealing a Visa card and a sheet with a silver panel like a Lotto scratch card.
‘These are pre-paid cards, each loaded with five thousand pounds,’ Miles explained. ‘The pin is under the scratch panel. They’re registered under a mix of false names, so the best way to use them is to draw cash from an ATM. I thought it would be good for you to have access to emergency funds when you arrive in Nigeria.’
‘How much did I get?’ Julius asked.
‘The total amount I was able to pull from SJ’s accounts was forty-two million. Minus my fifteen per cent, you get to keep £35,750,000. That’s a little less than I was hoping, but I couldn’t touch one account, because your uncle is actively using it to set up a new life.’
Julius looked intrigued. ‘New life?’
Miles looked pleased with himself as he slid out a green wallet halfway down the briefcase and showed Julius a bank statement. There were lots of transactions in UAE dollars for designer furniture, Ikea, a Dubai Lexus dealer and a high-end jewellery store.
‘Your uncle has a girlfriend,’ Miles explained. He tapped a woman’s name below Simon J Adebisi at the top of the statement. ‘Nanna Holm. Google says she’s a Norwegian software developer, who recently worked in the IT department at the Port Harcourt branch of the West African Development Bank.’
‘SJ has four wives and nine kids,’ Julius said disbelievingly. ‘Maybe eleven. I’ve lost count.’
‘If I had four wives and eleven kids, I’d want to run away,’ Miles pointed out. ‘Besides buying jewellery and furniture, your uncle paid six million US dollars for a villa on Dubai Creek and has a four-hundred-thousand-dollar powerboat on order.’
‘I wouldn’t have guessed,’ Julius said. ‘But he’s never liked living under my mum’s thumb. And he’s protective towards his kids, but his wives are hellcats.’
‘How can you have four wives?’ Georgia asked.
