Julius caught Bella’s breath again and found it unbearable. She was expecting a kiss and he tried to imagine it as something short but painless, like a trip to the dentist. But how many guys had a girl like this been with, and what might she have caught from them?

‘I’ll do anything you want,’ the girl said, full of longing. ‘I’ve got a room out back …’

Julius imagined a space with a dirty mattress and a smell of body spray as Bella cupped his balls.

‘Please,’ Julius stumbled, taking a step back but dragging Bella with him.

The circle closed in, reinforced by St Gilda’s girls keen to see the action.

‘Kiss her,’ Collins demanded. ‘Don’t show our family up.’’

But Julius decided he’d rather get stomped by every guy in the circle than let himself be humiliated.

‘I’ll find my own women,’ Julius shouted as he gave Bella a slight shove. ‘No disrespect.’

The circle erupted in outrage as Bella flung herself back in a dive worthy of the English Premier League.

A furious Collins went on tiptoes and got right up in Julius’s face.

‘You’re a shame on this family, Julius. You’re no cousin of mine …’

Collins was a monster. Julius knew his hardest punch would just make an excuse for his cousin to beat him bloody. But Julius had a moment of drunk inspiration, grabbing the back of his cousin’s head and sinking teeth into Collins’s nose.

Collins escaped easily, but the blood streaming over his top lip and into his mouth bought Julius time, as guys backed off and someone screamed.

Julius half expected to wake from a dream as he stumbled back. Pulsing blue lights showed Collins bleeding, Bella being helped off the floor and several phones filming. But the mushroom of flesh in his mouth was real, and so was cousin Luke’s enormous fist, covered in gold rings and coming straight towards his face …

Georgia strode briskly, hands in pockets to keep warm. She walked long enough for her nose to start feeling numb. At first, she was scared her phone might ring, but after an hour she was offended that it hadn’t. Presumably, John thought she was in her room and had decided to let her stew.

She dared herself to walk through the Isaac Newton Estate in the dark. She almost wanted something bad to happen to stall the dark thoughts circling her head. But the estate was more cosy than daunting. Kids on pre-bedtime bike rides with parents keeping an eye out from balconies, TVs flickering and bodies shifting inside steamed-up kitchens.

Georgia choked up when she realised she’d unconsciously found the way to her old primary school. She’d been a proud but heartbroken nine-year-old when her big sister had left for university.
