She scrubbed Julius’s messy scribbles off her dad’s giant whiteboard and began a new chart in neater writing, showing the balance in each bank account, along with arrows indicating where money in each account had come from.
The exercise appealed to Georgia’s perfectionist side. The part that wanted an A in every exam and felt off when her shoes weren’t lined up under the bed. She looked irritated when Julius tried to help and groaned when her ankle bracelet bleeped and she had to call the monitoring centre.
By nine thirty, Georgia had a large, four-colour diagram on the whiteboard and stacks of paperwork in labelled folders. Her head turned and heart quickened when she heard a key rattle in the door.
‘Why bother telling me where you’re going?’ John said as he stepped in. ‘It’s not as if I worry about you or anything …’
John narrowed his eyes on Julius and the double mattress, then at stacks of neat paperwork and his whiteboard filled with things like £3,294,016: Ondo Department of Education, surrounded by a spider of arrows showing where stolen money went.
‘You’ve only been home two days,’ John said, sounding unexpectedly cheerful. ‘Can’t you just get pregnant or do drugs like a normal teenager?’
SIXTY-SEVEN
Matt’s dad, Miles Taylor, parked his McLaren in front of the workshop, emerged in a hoodie and sunglasses and peered up and down the street like he was expecting special forces to abseil down the buildings and put him under arrest.
‘I wasn’t expecting anyone but you,’ Miles told Julius warily as he stepped into the workshop seeing Georgia and John.
‘My son owns many pictures of you,’ Miles told Georgia, then looked at John.
‘I’m Georgia’s father and this is my workshop,’ John explained. ‘No offence, but Julius is a kid. I stuck around because I’d hate to see him ripped off.’
‘Fair,’ Miles said thoughtfully. He shook John’s hand, tucked his sunglasses into his collar and whistled as he stared at the whiteboard. ‘There’s some big numbers up there. Who made this?’
Georgia raised a nervous hand. ‘And I’ve sorted the paperwork as best I can.’
‘I wish the admins at my office were this efficient,’ Miles said. ‘If you ever want an internship at a financial firm …’
‘Take her,’ John said keenly. ‘Keep her out of bloody mischief. She can work seven days a week for free.’
Georgia rolled her eyes. ‘Easy on the jokes, Dad. You wouldn’t want us being rushed to hospital because we laughed too hard.’
Miles smiled at John. ‘Remember when our kids just wanted to cuddle and build Lego?’
John nodded. ‘A very long time ago …’
Miles sat at the table and started flicking papers and making notes. Julius, John and Georgia stood behind, staring.
