The train doors beeped and closed as Julius took shelter in the fragrant confines of the men’s toilet. He’d been breathing the stench of a clogged bowl for fifteen minutes, when the Dormansland Hall bus returned to take the older girls back to their dorms.
Julius hadn’t been able to get a data signal in the toilet, but after trains at 22:16 and 22:46, he hoped a 23:16 would be along shortly.
He got a bad feeling when he stepped back onto the platform and saw that all lights, apart from a pair of green emergency exit signs, had switched themselves off. The arrivals board flickered with random dots, while the one on the platform opposite had an unhelpful Welcome to Southern Railways.
‘Are you kidding?’ Julius groaned as he pulled Matt’s torch out of a pocket.
He shone it along the back of the platform and found timetable boards. His finger ran to the end of Departures to London, showing that the last train was the 22:46. Then he aimed the torch up and saw that the next wasn’t until 05:57.
SIXTY-ONE
Georgia awoke to musty pink bedding in her nan’s spare room. She rolled, resenting the electronic bracelet on her ankle as she burrowed under the strap and scratched. She’d longed to get out of the Freeman Unit, but part of her craved the routine. Walking upstairs for breakfast with Alex and two hours in the therapy circle … Now she was out, she had no school, no house, no clear plan and a giant wall of guilt because she’d cost her parents their home.
How can I hate a mother that spent her life savings on me?
How can I be free, when Zac and the others are behind bars?
Her nan’s bathroom had an old-lady smell and bars of soap instead of handwash. She peeked out of the window before sitting down to pee and saw that the press hadn’t budged. She ran the shower hot to clear her mind, but the ankle bracelet broke the calm with a beep.
She had fifteen minutes to call in, but the amber light would strobe until she did. She found it infuriating as she towelled off and skipped back to her room, in a quilted robe that had belonged to her granddad.
The system was automated. Press one to respond to bracelet activation. Press two to report a problem with your bracelet … Georgia pressed one. Please enter your six-digit bracelet number followed by the hash key … By the time she’d entered her PIN and recorded a message stating her time and location, the strap was itching again.
Georgia randomly opened her Instagram and saw that the picture with Sam in the courtroom had 73,441 likes. She took a photo of her ankle bracelet and bare foot, then wrote: This damned thing itches like CRAZY!!!
