‘I will need the governor’s authorisation on various cheques and documents,’ Eddie explained. ‘You can practise his signature while I work through the electronic transfers.’
FIFTY-ONE
John Pack had spent weeks in his dark place. No shower, shave or haircut and he’d dropped seven kilos because food didn’t matter. But a daughter – the only one left – on the end of a phone and in trouble snapped his mind into focus.
He told Georgia to wipe her face, find a cafe, order a coffee and sit somewhere out of sight. He told her not to resist if the police tried to arrest her, then he hung up and dialled the solicitor who’d done contracts for his drone business, unsure if he’d pick up on a Saturday.
‘You want Megan Seebag at Buick-Seebag,’ the lawyer said. ‘She’ll cost, but she’s the best.’
John found Buick-Seebag’s twenty-four-hour number, explained that he was the father of the girl who’d piloted the drone that set the prime minister’s head on fire, and was halfway into a pair of trousers when Megan returned the call.
‘You called the right person,’ Megan said confidently. ‘I’m going to explain exactly what your next steps should be. Do you have a pen?’
When Georgia’s phone rang, she was in the basement of a Pret a Manger, too sick to drink the flat white cupped in her hands.
‘Megan said it’s important to show you are co-operating at every stage,’ John explained. Georgia noticed how he sounded like his old self. ‘When I hang up, call 999 and tell them where you are. Megan says they’ll take you to the anti-terrorist unit at Holborn police station. Be polite, but say nothing about the attack until Megan gets there.’
‘OK,’ Georgia sniffed.
‘Megan will be at Holborn in forty minutes. I’ll drive down, but with Saturday shopping traffic it might take a while.’
‘OK,’ Georgia choked.
‘Do it straight away,’ John said. ‘Love you.’
‘Love you,’ Georgia said tearfully.
Tapping 999 into her dialler app felt monumental.
‘Which service, please?’
‘Police,’ Georgia said.

‘Turns out I’m pretty good at forging the governor’s signature,’ Julius laughed.
Duke sat on the sofa in his uncle’s apartment, watching Julius on an HP laptop.
‘I photographed everything that looked important before I put the documents back in the safe,’ Julius explained. ‘It didn’t seem sophisticated. Just taking a ton of cash from Ondo government accounts and putting it in shell companies owned by my uncle.’
‘How much?’ Duke asked.
‘It was all different currencies, but I’d guess tens of millions of US dollars. And it was coming out of stuff like Ondo State Food Programme and the Police Department.’
Duke tutted. ‘That’s literally stealing food from starving kids …’
